The 2023 offseason was always going to be a pivotal one for the Boston Celtics, and they have made some big moves in it so far. They traded away Marcus Smart to land Kristaps Porzingis and let Grant Williams leave in a sign-and-trade, but their biggest offseason move is yet to be made.

Jaylen Brown has been eligible to sign a five-year, $304 million supermax extension since July 1st. No deal was struck in the first couple of weeks of the month, though, and after that, Brown headed out to Spain on NBA Players Association business. He is now finally back and talks are set to resume next week.

“With Jaylen Brown now back in Boston from his NBPA retreat in Spain, contract talks will resume next week, according to a league source.”

Brown had another fine campaign in 2022-23, with averages of 26.6 PPG, 6.9 RPG, 3.5 APG, 1.1 SPG, and 0.4 BPG, but you certainly wouldn’t blame the Celtics for not rushing to hand him that contract.

Brown isn’t a superstar, and it certainly would be an overpay if he lands the largest contract in NBA history. The fact that they still need to have discussions implies that the Celtics are trying to bring that number down but it doesn’t look like they’re going to be all that successful in that quest.

The Celtics Have No Choice But To Give Jaylen Brown The Supermax

Ultimately though, the Celtics don’t have much of a choice. If they don’t give him that supermax deal, Brown is likely to leave next season as a free agent, and their title window would slam shut if that happens.

With his name always being dangled in trade packages for superstars like Kevin Durant over the years, Brown would feel no obligation to help the team by taking a hometown discount.

Just like how the Celtics had their best interests in mind, Brown is going to have his best interests in mind in these negotiations and the team will eventually give him the deal he wants.
