Jayson Tatum spoke to the press after the Celtics won the NBA championship. He was asked his thoughts about his teammate Jaylen Brown winning the 2024 NBA Finals MVP. Tatum congratulated his teammate, and praised his performance, but also clarified that neither of them was concerned about who won Finals MVP, as they were both locked in and focused on who would win the NBA championship.

“First of all, congrats to him. Well deserved, extremely happy for him. This is a hell of an accomplishment. The main goal for us was to win a championship. We didn’t care who got Finals MVP. I know that I need him through this journey, and he needs me. So, it was great seeing him have that moment and share that moment with him. I’m extremely happy for him, well deserved. That was big time, he earned it.”

Jayson Tatum was appreciative of his teammate and gave him his flowers. But it is clear that he didn’t bother too much about who won Finals MVP as long as he got to win an NBA championship. And in fairness, Brown was the standout player for the Celtics during this series, whereas Jayson Tatum struggled until the last game of the series.

Jaylen Brown averaged 20.8 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 5.0 assists in the NBA Finals, shooting 44% from the field, and 23.8% from the three-point line. Whereas Jayson Tatum averaged 22.2 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 7.2 assists, shooting 38.8% from the field, and 26.3 % from the three-point line.

These stats don’t tell the whole story, as Tatum scored less than 20 points in three out of the five games in the NBA Finals, whereas Brown only scored less than 20 points once in the series.

Can The Celtics Run It Back Next Season?

The Celtics are in a great position as they enter a new era. Having won the NBA championship, they will have all of their core pieces heading into the next season. After their win this year, the Celtics will be the favorites once again to win the NBA championship next season.

If the Celtics win it all again next season, they will be the first team to go back-to-back as NBA champions since the Golden State Warriors, who repeated as champions in 2017 and 2018. The Celtics could be on the verge of starting another dynasty,

Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown have accomplished their goal together – winning an NBA championship. But this win is not going to slow down their ambition, as they are going to want to continue their winning ways. It will be up to them to lead the way for the Celtics, as they are the two leaders of the squad.

Tatum could target winning the Finals MVP next year, as he could step up for the Celtics next year should they reach the NBA Finals again. But all of this is premature, and the talk of repeating is not going to begin anytime soon. For now, Tatum, Brown, and the Celtics will enjoy their moment as NBA champions.
