The ban on the use of marijuana was lifted by the NBA when a new CBA was formed on April 03, 2023.
It was an end to a long battle between the league and NBPA. Former NBA player John Salley recently explained in an interview with VladTV why China was against the legal use of marijuana in the NBA.
“The biggest push against it was China,” Salley said. “So they had to appease China because whatever these guys are going to do, the Chinese are going to want to do. China doesn’t want marijuana.”

The NBA is the biggest basketball league in the world. Keeping that in mind, it’s no surprise that whatever happens in the NBA, other leagues around the world will want to copy it as well.
As a result, Salley firmly believes that China was pushing the league to make sure that the ban on marijuana doesn’t get lifted. Well, they have failed, and now fans may see a similar thing happen in basketball leagues in China.
John Salley Says Marijuana Is Good For The NBA
For better or worse, NBA players will no longer get drug tested for marijuana. When the news was unveiled, it sparked a debate among fans about whether the decision was correct or not.
John Salley is definitely in support of the league allowing players to legally smoke marijuana. He explained the reason in the same interview with VladTV.
“To have a rule against a drug that makes guys not violent, not aggressive, sleep, and not go out? I would want that drug. I would want that stimulant to my place. That’s cannabis.”
A new CBA has been formed, and it is valid for the next seven years. It is still up to the players to make sure they do not abuse the use of marijuana. Let’s hope what Salley has said turns out to be true.
