Kevin Durant has called out rapper Fat Joe for lying about him after Joe went onto the ‘Roommates Show’ and claimed that Durant was nearly jumped in the iconic Rucker Park after an 82-point performance. The Suns forward referred to Joe’s statements as ‘another podcast lie.’

Joe had claimed that Durant had scored 82 points in three quarters and was then chased out of Rucker Park, with people wanting to beat him up as they chased him to his truck.
“He scored like 82 points in the third quarter. He doesn’t like me telling this story, but they chased him out of Rucker Park. They wanted to beat him up. He whipped their a** so bad that they tried to beat him up out there. He was checking it out and then — whoosh, a three. I was there at the game. He scored like 80 points, and I was out there, and they chased him into the truck. He had to go.”
Rucker Park is one of the most iconic outdoor basketball venues in the world, with the park having an integral role in shaping New York’s robust basketball culture. NBA players may have safety concerns in the massive open space primarily used by the inner-city population, but Durant was at home whenever he played there.
Given the extensive footage of Durant playing at Rucker Park, it’s shocking that nobody recorded the 7-footer running away from the court and towards his own car while being chased by an angry mob.
That would have genuinely been a hilarious Durant clip, but we may have to side with the current Phoenix Suns forward to have a more plausible story.
Kevin Durant Has Never Been Afraid To Play In Hostile Environments
Even though there is a narrative amongst many local Rucker Park players that NBA players aren’t capable of handling the competition of hooping in the iconic Park. While there definitely would be some players who would struggle to succeed in this environment, it’s crazy for us to think that a player like Durant wouldn’t have been able to.
What’s crazier to think is that park-goers wanted to beat Durant up for cooking them. He’s an NBA player and this is a space where we’ve seen the likes of Kyrie Irving bring his children.
The respect for NBA players in these situations is much higher, so it’s unlikely that someone would come out and try to create a bad situation for the players. NBA players play in Rucker Park almost every offseason, so pushing it as a ‘dangerous’ place to play is disingenuous.
This park once saw Kobe Bryant give everyone buckets in Air Force 1’s, so it’s hard to believe that they’d be so mad at Durant for giving them buckets that they’d chase him out of the park. In addition, if there’s anyone who knows how to excel when everyone around you is booing, it’s Durant.
