It’s not good news if you are a Kyle Lowry fan. The Miami Heat are reportedly considering waiving the guard if they cannot find the right trade move for him.
According to two sources, the Heat has been giving thought to potentially using the waive-and-stretch provision on Lowry if Miami is unable to trade him, though a firm decision on that has not been made,” wrote the Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson.
“That waive-and-stretch mechanism would allocate his remaining cap hit equally over three seasons,” he added. It’s worth noting that Lowry is due $29.7 million next season in the final season of a three-year contract.
It wasn’t the greatest of runs for Lowry this past season, as he averaged a meager 11.2 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 5.1 assists. The decline can be attributed to age and injuries, but what the Heat now know is that it’s inevitable, explaining how the move is more than just about cap flexibility.
Will Kyle Lowry Remain With The Heat For the 2023-24 Season?
Given the recent update, it’s hard to imagine if Lowry will be part of the Heat for the upcoming season. He was already on the trade block when the Heat offered him along with Duncan Robinson and multiple first-round picks for Bradley Beal when they were trying to strike a deal with the Washington Wizards.
The one possibility of Lowry remaining with the Heat is if Jimmy Butler decides to keep him as part of the team. He has spoken highly of the guard in the past, and the team will be inclined to listen to Butler who has been their bonafide franchise superstar.
But at this point, the Heat needs more support for Butler and Bam Adebayo, and if it means shipping Lowry, there’s every chance that they will consider moving him for a player who can fit in his place. Only time will tell if he indeed remains with the Heat for the 2023-24 season, or find a new home in the NBA.
