After a lot of speculation about potentially signing elsewhere, Kyrie Irving decided to re-sign with the Dallas Mavericks, getting a deal worth $126 million over three years.

This was a big move for the Mavericks, as the deal allows them to still use their full mid-level exception. But Bill Simmons decided it would be a good idea to roast the contract and Kyrie, tweeting, “Dallas had to go to 3 for 126m for Kyrie because there were at least 3 other teams ready to offer 2 for 25.”

Kyrie Irving took exception to this tweet from Simmons, going right back at him on Twitter saying, “I see you couldn’t help yourself with this one huh Billy Boy. Just wanna say I appreciate you and continue to be the person you are. My Tribe says hello.”

Bill Simmons is arguably the biggest fan of Boston sports, especially the Celtics. With the way Kyrie Irving left that team, it’s easy to see why he still holds some animosity toward the mercurial point guard. But the deal is objectively a good one for both Kyrie and Dallas, so his being salty about it does make it a slightly lousy look.

Kyrie Irving is all about spreading a message of love and peace, and his callback encapsulated that perfectly. He responded to the trolling by showing his appreciation for Simmons while also subtly calling him out, a classy response. Considering that Irving has just earned at least two years of potential title contention alongside Luka Doncic while also making over $40 million a year, it’s easy for him to be gracious too.

The Dallas Mavericks Are A Quality Starting Wing Away From Title Contention

The Mavericks managed to acquire three players, including two centers, on the night of the draft while also moving on from the Davis Bertans’ contract. They now have Luka Doncic, who averaged 32 points, 8 rebounds, and 8 assists last season, alongside Kyrie Irving, who averaged 27 points, 5 rebounds, and 6 assists per game locked in the backcourt.

If they can find a trade package for a starting wing player, or sign one to the mid-level exception, they would have a pretty stacked-looking roster. The Mavericks have been linked with Grant Williams and Dillon Brooks, both of whom are still available. On top of that, a trade for a starting center isn’t out of the question either. A couple more moves might just make them a championship contender next season.
