It was a regular Monday after Game 2 of the NBA Finals and then a report dropped suggesting that Irving has told LeBron James to come to Dallas and team up with him and Luka Doncic amidst heavy rumors of Kyrie and LeBron teaming up on the Lakers together.
Marc Stein has reported that Kyrie’s motivations could be behind him showing to the world that he wants to remain with the Dallas Mavericks and shut down the notion of him wanting to be a Laker.
“Consistently expressed a desire to remain a Maverick and actually wants to shut down the notion that he’s angling to get to L.A.” Stein added, “He wants to stay,” said one source.
The financial advantages that Irving can reap by staying with the Mavericks are immense, so it makes sense for him to stay if Dallas is offering him the full max. Irving has made $236 million over the course of his 12-year career and stands to make $210 million in the next four seasons if he re-signs with Dallas.
Kyrie Irving Draws A Line In The Sand
With Irving leaning towards re-signing and staying in Dallas, it makes sense for him to start recruiting talent to join him and Doncic for their championship aspirations. Mavs are reportedly not going to facilitate sign-and-trade offers for Kyrie, which means if he wants his money, he needs to stay in Dallas.
If James can publicly court Irving to come to his team, Irving can do the same. An Irving-Luka-LeBron trio is far too ambitious for Dallas to pull off via trade and their limited assets, so this is a very unlikely trade scenario.
What this does start to rule out is Irving wanting to go to the Lakers. He does want to play with LeBron, but it seems like he would rather do so at the stop he is currently in with arguably the brightest young star in the NBA.
