Kyrie Irving and Dillon Brooks had a pretty feisty matchup during the Mavericks vs. Grizzlies contest tonight. The Grizzlies walked out with a 108-112 win at home.

Kyrie Irving was having a fantastic game, even trash-talking Dillon Brooks during a 20-point first half. However, a play where Brooks stepped on the back of Irving’s foot halted that momentum.

Irving was seen in a walking boot during the post-game media commitments. He revealed that the boot is precautionary, but he did end up reaggravating the foot injury that caused him to miss 3 games in the last week.

A lot of blame is falling on Brooks already. It doesn’t look like Brooks set out to step on Irving’s heel and injure him, especially with the Dwight Powell screen obstructing his way. Even still, Brooks’s aggressive pursuit of Irving meant he stepped on the star’s foot. Could it have been avoided? Sure. Was it a malicious play designed to hurt Kyrie? Probably not.

Kyrie Irving’s Injury Struggles Resurface

The one thing about Irving’s recent career that people forget is that he isn’t always missing games for personal reasons or suspensions. He has had a legitimately troubling injury history in recent years, especially concerning his foot. The Brooklyn Nets’ 2021 playoff run fell apart due to Irving getting injured. He also missed most of his debut season in Brooklyn with an injury.

He has tried staying active for the Mavs but even Dallas wouldn’t want to risk his long-term health right now. They are hoping to re-sign him and have him around for a few more seasons alongside Luka Doncic. If these injury concerns keep making Irving miss time, the Mavs may be in an extremely rough spot.

He will likely return from this particular injury soon enough, and Irving has already set out to be healthy for their Wednesday night clash against the Golden State Warriors.
