Kyrie Irving was supposed to be a Laker, that’s what most Lakers fans would tell anyone willing to listen. The team was heavily linked with a trade for him in the offseason, but Irving ended up staying with the Brooklyn Nets instead. So when he put in a trade request last week, it seemed like they would finally get their man. But unfortunately, fate and the Nets had different plans.
While the Dallas Mavericks certainly made a generous offer for Kyrie Irving, considering that he was in the last few months of his contract, they were far from the only interested party. It’s been reported that 4 teams reached out to the Nets with packages for Irving, including the Lakers.
Los Angeles certainly had a generous offer made for Irving, but there were reported issues with Irving’s lack of commitment to signing a 2-year extension. But that wasn’t all, it seems Nets owner Joe Tsai was quite clear about not letting Kyrie go to the Lakers.
“The Nets also succeeded, as one source close to the process put it, in meeting one of the presumed objectives held by team owner Joe Tsai by sending Irving somewhere other than the Lakers — his preferred destination.”
Joe Tsai and Kyrie Irving have famously not gotten along, as became evident during the saga surrounding his big controversy earlier in the season. But this time, the price is being paid by Lakers fans, which they’re understandably not thrilled about.
Lakers Fans Were Upset After Joe Tsai Got In The Way Of Their Team Getting Kyrie Irving
It was no secret that Kyrie Irving wanted to team up with LeBron James on the Lakers, but Tsai wasn’t going to let that happen on his watch. That’s why this became a part of the mandate for trading Irving. Lakers fans didn’t hold back after the news broke, properly calling Tsai out.
“It sounds like Rob actually did make a valid attempt.”
“Tsai had personal beef.”
“So we were never going to get him.”
“This makes me optimistic about free agency.”
“Tsai probably hates Kyrie. Sabotaged the team and has been a handful to deal with. Tsai was being petty.”
“Wild that Tsai held a personal grudge.”
“What the hell, Joe Tsai.”
“What did we ever do to you?”
“I hate Joe Tsai man.”
“I get where he was coming from, but come on man.”
“This is so lame man, billionaires shouldn’t be this petty.”
Kyrie Irving is a Dallas Maverick now, but as a free agent, he could still sign with the Lakers in the offseason. It all depends on how things go in Dallas, especially throughout the postseason. As for the Lakers, they have to live with knowing that the greatest reinforcement they could have gotten is now inaccessible for a while.
