As the first father-son duo in NBA history, LeBron and Bronny James will be in uncharted territory for their first season together. Already, LeBron is setting some ground rules for their playtime together — such as demanding that Bronny not call him “dad” when they’re on the clock.

“He can’t call me dad, we already laid that down. [Bronny] cannot call me dad in the workplace. Once we leave out of the practice facility and the gates close, I could be ‘dad’ again. In the car we ride together, at home I can be ‘dad.’ He’s gotta call me 2-3, or Bron, or GOAT if he wants to. It’s up to him! It’s easy for me cause I’ve been calling him Bronny for so long. It’s not like I’ve been calling him ‘hey, son.’ It’s easy for me but it’s going to be an adjustment for him. But we can’t be running down the court like, ‘Dad, I’m open!'”

LeBron James is a 21-year veteran of the NBA. As a 4x champion, 4x MVP, and 20x All-Star, he’s done everything possible in the NBA and he’s got nothing left to prove. At 39 years old, James has made it clear that he’s nearing the end of his career but he intends to play out these next two years alongside his son.

Bronny, 19, was drafted by the Lakers with the 55th pick this summer after averaging 4.8 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game in college. While many critics are unconvinced of his potential, it didn’t stop the Lakers from picking him and signing him a four-year, $7.9 million rookie contract.

We don’t know how much Bronny will play next season, or how long he’ll spend in the G-League, but he will be sharing the court with LeBron, and other Lakers teammates, throughout the season during practice and some games as a point guard off the bench.

Everyone is aware of the relationship between LeBron and Bronny and the nepotism involved in bringing them together but it’s probably best for them to take a cautious approach in how they act during business hours. For a Lakers team desperate to compete, they need to maximize team chemistry and ensure that every player is on the same page.

If people start to think that LeBron is showing favoritism toward his son or sacrificing winning plays to make Bronny look good it could lead to a major falling out and disrupt the locker room chemistry. So for LeBron and Bronny, it’s probably best if they treat each other as strictly teammates on the court rather than father and son.

After finishing 7th in the West last season, the Lakers are coming in as underdogs for the 2024-25 campaign but there is still hope they can make a serious run. With LeBron James, Anthony Davis, and Austin Reaves, the Lakers have a solid core in place, and their rookies (Bronny James and Dalton Knecht) give them a direction for the future.

But if LeBron and Bronny are able to hit a stride together, it could enhance the Lakers’ standing in the West and validate their commitment to creating the first generational duo in NBA history. Clearly, the pair have already had some conversations about what their time together will look like.
