LeBron James accomplished something on Tuesday night that many had previously considered almost impossible, eclipsing Kareem Abdul Jabbar to become the all-time leading scorer. The record had stood for over 38 years and while a few had threatened to break it in all these years, no one ultimately could.

It is a testament to LeBron’s greatness and the scary part is that he is not really close to being done just yet. If catching Kareem was considered near-impossible, catching LeBron would have to be considered literally impossible.

Inevitably, James breaking this record once again brought up the GOAT debate. After the game against the Oklahoma City Thunder, LeBron was asked about it and he stated he would ultimately take no one over himself.

(starts at 5:45 mark):

“I don’t know, I think it’s great barbershop talk, it’s gonna happen forever and ever. If I was the GM or whatever the case may be of a franchise that was starting up and I had the No. 1 pick, I’d take me. But that’s just me because I believe in myself. I know what I bring to the table.”

“That don’t take away from nobody else. I mean so many great players have played this game and had long legacies in this game. This NBA is a beautiful thing and it’s been some beautiful players to play it but I can’t take nobody over me.”

He also spoke about how he has managed to transform his game over the years. The NBA has changed so much since he came in, all the way back in 2003 and he has stayed at, or near the top, no matter how the game was being played. You certainly can’t be criticized for going with Michael Jordan, Kareem, Kobe Bryant, or Shaquille O’Neal to start a franchise, but it is safe to say that LeBron won’t be the incorrect choice either.

LeBron James Feels He Is The Greatest Basketball Player

There has been a lot of talk about what exactly this accomplishment would mean for LeBron’s legacy. We had legends like Dirk Nowitzki say that he’d be running out of arguments for Jordan to be the GOAT if James broke the record and many would agree.

LeBron though, felt he was already the greatest, even before he did this. He had said that based on what he brings to the table and wasn’t sure if this record takes him to another level. As James himself said in that postgame media session, this GOAT talk is going to go on forever and ultimately, there is no correct answer as it is all subjective.
