While the Los Angeles Lakers may have failed to live up to expectations in the 2022-23 NBA season, it is safe to say that LeBron James, on a personal level, has surpassed expectations. James is having another outstanding campaign as he just shows no signs of slowing down in his 20th season.

It wasn’t the best of starts for LeBron but he has been great after the first few weeks of the season. He has been quite dominant, in particular, since turning 38, as he is averaging 33.7 PPG, 9.3 RPG, and 8.3 APG while shooting 51.5% from the field, which is just ridiculous.

He recently sat down for an interview with Michael Wilbon for ESPN, where he spoke on a host of topics. When Wilbon asked if he has surprised himself with how good he has been playing, LeBron admitted that he has been.

“I would say I do. I would say it’s more sometimes like the back-to-back games or the 3rd game in 4 nights where sometimes I’ll wake up and I’m like, ‘I ain’t gonna make it tonight.’ I just feel it. I say, ‘The 20 years got to me tonight. Ain’t gonna be good tonight.’ And then I get out on the floor and I’m running past 21-year-olds, jumping higher than 23-year-olds. I feel real good on how I’m playing the game, not only physically but more importantly mentally. I’m just so much more sharper now at year 20 than I was at year 10, or even year 15.”

It really is impressive to see him just blow by some of the younger players and get up high for monstrous dunks at the rim. That mental aspect is so important too, as he reads the game ever so well and it helps him stay one step ahead of the opposition. While he was pretty happy here, that wasn’t the case throughout the interview.

LeBron James Spoke On The Lakers Missing Out On Kyrie Irving

When LeBron heard the news that Kyrie Irving requested a trade from the Brooklyn Nets, he would have been pretty excited. It seemed like a championship move had presented itself to the Lakers just before the trade deadline but they were unable to seal the deal, as Irving was traded to the Dallas Mavericks.

LeBron admitted he was disappointed that the Lakers couldn’t acquire Kyrie but said his focus has now shifted to working well with the group they have. Their failure to trade for Irving though might potentially go down as one of the bigger What-ifs in recent NBA history, as a big 3 of Irving, James, and Anthony Davis could have been devastating.
