Rob Pelinka has been on fire so far ahead of this trade deadline. The Los Angeles Lakers have been making moves on moves as they retool their roster for a playoff run. And the latest one will be a surprise to many people.

The Los Angeles Lakers did have a lot of guards on their roster this season, but now they have traded quite a few of them away. Russell Westbrook is gone, as is Kendrick Nunn, and now Patrick Beverley, their big summer acquisition, has become the latest player to be traded away.

Other teams have been upgrading massively in one shot. The Dallas Mavericks got Kyrie Irving, while the Phoenix Suns went and landed Kevin Durant. The Lakers haven’t been able to swing big in that fashion, but they have added D’Angelo Russell, Rui Hachimura, Jarred Vanderbilt, and Malik Beasley to complement LeBron James and Anthony Davis. And now, one more big man is making his way to them.

The Orlando Magic Are Sending Mo Bamba To The Lakers In Exchange For Patrick Beverley

The Lakers were a pretty big team when they won the NBA championship in 2020, and it seems Pelinka is going back to that. They are sending Patrick Beverley to the Orlando Magic in exchange for Mo Bamba, who was picked 6th in the 2018 NBA draft.

“The Magic are trading for Lakers guard Patrick Beverley. The Magic are trading Mo Bamba to the Lakers, a source tells ESPN.”

In 69 starts for the Orlando Magic last season, Mo Bamba averaged over 10 points and 8 rebounds per game. The loss of Thomas Bryant after he reportedly wanted to move away is made up for by the acquisition of Bamba. Losing Patrick Beverley isn’t exactly ideal, considering what a vocal presence he is, but in theory, this is a good move for the Los Angeles Lakers.

Slowly but surely, the Lakers are fleshing out their roster in a way they arguably should have in the offseason. But as they say, better late than never, and in an open Western Conference, the time to make moves and upgrades is now. Whether they are done for the day or not remains to be seen, but this is another swing from Rob Pelinka that could prove to be big for the Lakers.
