After a disappointing 2022-23 NBA season, Luka Doncic is working hard to return to the competition in the best shape. The Dallas Mavericks superstar has been criticized for his weight since he made it to the league, and he’s taking care of that by working out in the offseason.

Doncic shared a picture on Instagram with fellow athlete Nikola Jovicevic, looking really lean.

Luka Doncic's lean story

The Slovenian player looked heavy in the past season, and many named this as a reason why he couldn’t perform at his best during the campaign. The Mavericks paired him up with Kyrie Irving ahead of the 2023 trade deadline, but this experiment didn’t work out for them.

Now many want the team to split Luka and Kyrie. Irving can get a huge extension from the Mavericks this summer, but his future could be away from the team too. The Los Angeles Lakers are still mentioned as a potential landing spot for the controversial point guard, but nobody knows what will happen to him next.

With the pressure of keeping Luka happy, the Mavericks know the clock is ticking for them. Doncic could request a trade next season if the team fails to compete again in the 2023-24 season.

A recent report suggests that the New York Knicks would be the first team to get the chance to land Doncic in case the Mavericks decide to move on from him or vice versa.

This is pure speculation, of course, but if the Mavericks can’t win the championship next year, it’s very likely that Doncic will at least start showing signs of frustration. This season, he posted 32.4 points, 8.6 rebounds and 8.0 assists in 66 games with the Mavericks.

Luka Doncic Reportedly Unhappy With Kyrie Irving’s Attempt To Recruit LeBron James To Mavericks

Meanwhile, the Slovenian star is reportedly unhappy with Kyrie Irving trying to lure LeBron James to the Dallas Mavericks. It would be interesting to see LeBron alongside Doncic and Irving, but that seems unlikely right now.

And to be honest, it’s better this way. Doncic, Irving, and James are ball-dominant players, and putting them together would be a terrible idea for the Mavericks. The Lakers already know what can happen when a team has many of these players on the roster, and the Mavs should run away from this possibility.

As of right now, Luka is working to get in the best shape ahead of the 2023-24 NBA season. He also has the 2023 FIBA World Cup coming, where he’ll try to win the gold with the Slovenian national team. Doncic might have more than one reason to work out this offseason, and everybody will be happy about that.
