Luka Doncic finally got a fellow All-Star on the Dallas Mavericks when the team swung big and landed Kyrie Irving at the trade deadline. However, the move didn’t work out so well for them, with the team eventually falling out of the play-in tournament.
Kyrie Irving is a free agent this offseason, and there are a lot of conflicting reports over whether he will stay with the Dallas Mavericks or not. As per an anonymous GM’s words to Heavy, though, it seems Doncic may not want to continue the relationship.
“I do think there’s some skepticism going forward for what they’re going to offer him,” an anonymous GM told Bulpett. “Like they’re not completely naïve. But Kyrie’s behavior was excellent. It was more the fact that Luka had to adjust to playing with such a great player. Everyone there has been saying Kyrie is incredible, and that’s in private, too. Luka’s said it and he means it.
“But I think that he just doesn’t want to share. He just doesn’t know how. He’s out there on the court and the ball has been in his hands; no matter what, it’s his ball. And now there’s a consideration that I might need to pass the ball to somebody else and let them do the magic, instead of me just waiting for the clock to run down and shoot a step-back 3 from the hash mark.”
Luka Doncic has been the man in Dallas since his second year in the NBA, putting up MVP-caliber seasons regularly. He is all about winning, though, so it does seem a bit unlikely that he would make reduced touches for him an issue when it comes to keeping a star teammate. It’s hard to tell what the Mavericks will decide, although Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving could thrive together with the right roster around them.
The Signs Are Pointing Towards Kyrie Irving Staying With The Dallas Mavericks
Before he left the Brooklyn Nets, it looked like a near-certainty that Kyrie Irving would join the Los Angeles Lakers. Many thought he would do so in free agency even after being traded to the Mavericks. But now it seems that the Lakers have lost interest in pursuing that avenue after retooling their roster at the trade deadline.
The Dallas Mavericks, on the other hand, are reportedly prepared to fight for Kyrie and want him to re-sign with the franchise. He averaged 27 points, 5 rebounds, and 6 assists for them in 20 games, so he has the production they need. It seems like Irving might remain a Maverick after all.
