The title of “greatest point guard of all time” in the NBA has been held by Los Angeles Lakers icon, Magic Johnson, for many years. However, Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors, a modern-day marvel, has ignited fresh debate about this revered mantle. Curry, a four-time NBA champion and the league’s only unanimous MVP, recently staked his claim to being the top point guard ever, even surpassing Magic.

However, while Curry spoke with conviction, Magic Johnson had an arsenal of facts to counter. In a recent conversation with Zach Gelb of CBS Sports Radio, Magic laid down the gauntlet to any claimants to his throne:

“If he got more than five championships. If he got more than three Finals MVPs and three league MVPs, then he’s the greatest. If he’s got more number one in assists all-time in the Finals, number two in double-doubles, number one in triple-doubles all-time in the NBA playoffs, number four in steals all-time in the playoffs.”

“If he’s got more than those numbers, he’s the best…I’m just saying if he’s got more than all those things then he’s the best, but the last time I checked, he doesn’t. But everyone has to decide for themselves who the best is.”

Who is the greatest point guard of all-time, @MagicJohnson or @StephenCurry30?

Magic emphatically makes the case as to why it's still him‼️

Johnson’s evidence-based argument makes it challenging to dismiss him in favor of Curry, especially considering the disparity in achievements. While Curry has time to add to his legacy, the fact remains that Magic’s accolades and influence on the game are hard to outshine. Until Curry can match or exceed these accomplishments, the GOAT point guard title seems secure in Magic Johnson’s grasp.

Magic Johnson: The Undisputed King Of Point Guards

Magic Johnson’s place in the pantheon of basketball greats isn’t merely due to his collection of accolades. Beyond the trophies and titles, it’s his unique blend of size, skill, and vision that cements his legacy as the greatest point guard in NBA history. Standing at 6’9″, Magic possessed the height of a forward, yet navigated the court with the finesse and agility of a guard. This rare combination made him a matchup nightmare for opponents.

Statistically, Magic’s prowess is evident. Over his career, he averaged 19.5 points, 11.2 assists, and 7.2 rebounds per game. Such numbers not only highlight his scoring ability but more importantly, his gift of elevating others’ play. His extraordinary assist numbers are a testament to his ability to dictate the pace of the game and create opportunities for his teammates.

Moreover, Magic’s impact on the game transcended raw stats. He played with an infectious energy and enthusiasm that galvanized the Showtime Lakers, captivating fans and demoralizing opponents. Magic’s court vision, basketball IQ, and leadership were unparalleled. While many guards have come and gone, none have managed to replicate the unique combination of talent and charisma that Magic brought to the hardwood, solidifying his status as the greatest point guard ever.

The Path For Stephen Curry To The Point Guard Throne

Stephen Curry, known for his mesmerizing ball-handling and sharpshooting skills, has undeniably altered the NBA landscape with the three-point revolution. His ability to hit deep threes and spread the floor has transformed team offenses league-wide, shifting basketball’s strategic emphasis toward perimeter shooting. This impact on the game is akin to legends of old who brought transformative playing styles.

However, to etch his name as the greatest point guard ever, Curry needs more than just game-changing influence. Accolades matter. While his achievements are impressive, with multiple NBA titles and MVPs, capturing more of these honors, especially Finals MVPs, is essential. The distinction of being the most valuable player in the grandest stage of them all will further bolster his claim.

Statistically, Curry might end up favorably compared to other point guard legends. His scoring prowess, combined with his assist numbers, showcases a blend of scoring and playmaking that’s rare. But to be universally recognized as the greatest, he’ll need to close the gap in terms of titles and key awards.

If Curry can accumulate more MVPs, Finals MVPs, and championships while maintaining his high statistical output, he’ll make a compelling case for the top spot among point guard royalty.
