With Jimmy Butler, Ban Adebayo, and Tyler Herro, nobody expected the Miami Heat to be fighting for a spot in the play-in tournament.
But, amid their struggles, there is a real possibility that the Miami Heat could land a top pick in the draft this year and it’s a scenario that should be haunting the entire NBA.
In a recent article, Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald broke down the chances for landing VIctor Wembanyama, or Scoot Henderson, in the upcoming draft.
“The Heat’s struggles have prompted some fans to wonder if there could be a big-picture upside to missing the playoffs altogether, a potential lottery ticket to drafting generational talents Victor Wembanyama or Scoot Henderson.”
The odds wouldn’t be high for the Heat, who are 7th in the standings and two games above .500, but there is a chance they could come out as the ultimate winners this offseason.
“The team with the best record among non-playoff teams has only a 0.5 chance to secure the No. 1 pick, expected to be Wembanyama (a sweet-shooting 7-2 center), and a 0.56 chance for the second pick, expected to be Henderson, a dynamic 6-2 guard. That team has a 2.41 percent chance for a top four pick.”

The chances go up gradually the worse a team’s record is, and the Heat only have 18 games left this season. Even if they lose at least 10 of those games, the Heat would still be hovering at a .500 record on the season.
So while the odds of a Wemby arrival in South Beach are low right now, never bet against the Heat and things going their way. Who knows, maybe if the team keeps losing as they have been recently, Pat Riley may pull the plug altogether and aim for a high spot in the draft.
Has The Championship Window Closed For The Heat?
The Heat have a pretty solid core in Butler, Bam, and Herro. The problem is everybody else. This season, the overall depth of the roster has been sorely lacking, as it was proven when 42-year-old Udonis Haslem was forced to check into a game.
Being able to draft Victor Wembanyama, one of the most highly anticipated prospects in NBA history, would certainly change the situation for the Heat and might immediately push them into a whole new stratosphere of contention.
