Michael Jordan recently made news when he decided to sell the Charlotte Hornets. Jordan acquired the team in 2010, back when they were the Charlotte Bobcats and operated as the majority owner for 13 years. Jordan’s time as the owner did not see the franchise experience massive success, but there were some incredible moments during his time.
Former NBA player Stephen Jackson shared an incredible story of Michael Jordan from his time with the Bobcats. He noted that the team had a disappointing loss, and Jordan was furious with them. At practice the next day, Jordan played with the second team against the starters and put on a Jordan-esque performance to get the win for the second team and send a message to the starters.
“The first year we got there, we got to the playoffs for the first time. MJ loved me for that alone. But when I first got there it was kind of rocky. I just got traded. We got our a** beat by somebody and he came in the locker room and was going off on us like we need to get our sh*t together… He came to practice the next day. Back on that shit…”

“He’s going off on us. Right to the point where he gets on the second team at practice. And we lose! He came out there, got on, pushed against whoever Gerald Wallace was guarding at the 3, kicked them out, and then got in that spot and played with the second team… He scored a couple of points to the point where he talks so much shit afterward, he grabbed the ball and dunked one on the way out”.
Michael Jordan was the most competitive player in NBA history, and that competitive spirit clearly stayed with him after retiring from the NBA. Jordan felt as though he had to send a message to his players, and he did it the only way he knew how; by showing them.
Michael Jordan Expected Greatness From Charlotte
Michael Jordan wanted to bring success to his home state’s team during his time as an owner. Jordan as a player, wrote an incredible story with the Chicago Bulls and brought the franchise success they had not seen before him and haven’t seen since he left.
However, that never happened. Now that lack of success is due to a lot of factors. Charlotte being a smaller market meant they couldn’t attract big-name players. Along with that, they didn’t draft players very well, with Kemba Walker and LaMelo Ball being the only All-Star players they drafted during their time.
Jordan bought the team in 2010 for approximately $275 million and has now sold it for more than 10 times the amount. In terms of a business decision, Jordan had another slam dunk, but fans of the Hornets will wish that Jordan could’ve brought more success to the franchise.
