The Dallas Mavericks had an incredibly disappointing season, going into a downward spiral following a blockbuster trade for Kyrie Irving and ending up not even making the play-in tournament.
With Luka Doncic entering his sixth season in the league, the Mavericks have to find a way to build a contending team around him. There have reportedly been discussions with the Atlanta Hawks around a trade but the Mavs want a different player than the ones the Hawks are willing to give up.
“In Atlanta, the Hawks will continue to explore trade scenarios for Collins,” Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports reported. “That has so far included preliminary talks with Dallas about swapping Collins and the No. 15 pick in the draft with the Mavericks for the No. 10 pick and Davis Bertans.
“Those talks did not develop very far, sources said, and Dallas indicated it would be more willing to consider that deal if Hawks center Clint Capela was the returning player from Atlanta.”
The Mavericks have so far failed to pair Luka Doncic with a proper, quality center, so it stands to reason they would want Capela. The 28-year-old averaged 12 points and 11 rebounds for the Hawks last season and would provide the sort of interior presence Dallas has been craving.
The Hawks have been shopping John Collins around for a while now, but he is owed over $51 million over the next two seasons and has a player option for $26 million more in 2025-26. Collins’ production has steadily declined since the 2019-20 season and his defense has been quite poor too, which explains why the Mavericks might not want him in a potential trade.
The Dallas Mavericks Are Willing To Part With The 10th Overall Pick For A Veteran Star
If they re-sign Kyrie Irving, which is likely, the Mavericks will want to add pieces that help them win now. As such, the 10th overall pick in a stacked 2023 NBA Draft is an asset they wouldn’t mind parting with for a veteran star, per reports.
“The Mavericks have dangled the 10th overall pick with the hope of landing a veteran player who can impact winning immediately.”
The front office will be looking to make some big moves, although their lack of cap space after re-signing Irving has limited their options severely. If they can land Capela in a trade, that would be a big upgrade, and they could then move for another starting-caliber defensive wing that could make a difference.
