Michael Jordan isn’t happy with load management, like so many other legends in the NBA. The Los Angeles Lakers icon recently discussed this controversial topic, revealing a conversation he had with Jordan.
During a recent appearance on Today, Magic said that during Jordan’s birthday party, His Airness spoke to him for about 30 minutes about load management.
“I hate it,” Johnson said about load management. “I dislike it. I was just at Michael Jordan’s 60th birthday party. He pulled me to the side, and we talked about that for 30 straight minutes. We played every game. We want to play every single game. We couldn’t wait to get out there on the court.”
Magic explained what drove him to play every possible game and how it’s changed for modern-day players. Just like Jordan, he thought about the fans and how much they paid to see him play.
“It’s about your ego, your passion, your love for the game,” Magic continued. “It’s about those fans who pay their hard-earned money to watch you play this game of basketball. And then we’re getting paid to play something that we love. So, you got to get out there. Last but not least, it’s about your team, where you stand. You’re losing games when you sit out. So, I dislike it. I hope they get rid of it for the fans and for the organizations and for the overall health of the game.”
Things have changed for superstars now, as some tend to avoid playing back-to-back games to stay fresh for the playoffs, while others say they’re just taking care of their injuries. These decisions have raised plenty of eyebrows around the league, with the NBA creating a rule to try to push it back a little.
Michael Jordan Once Warned The NBA About Load Management
Michael Jordan saw all of this coming and warned the league about it. He’s been against all these tactics forever and even told his Charlotte Hornets players they were paid to play every game of the season.
Just like MJ, Charles Barkley ripped players who get a lot of million and decide to sit out games. Charles Oakley also called them out, saying they were disrespecting fans with their actions.
It’s clear that former players, who had it more difficult than today’s players, aren’t happy with the way things are going right now.
