Michael Jordan’s 13-year run as owner of the Charlotte Hornets is officially set to end in the near future following the approval of the sale by the NBA’s Board of Governors this week. The move marks the end of an era for Charlotte, who are now facing a daunting rebuild ahead.
Per ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the new ownership group is being by Rick Schnall and Gabe Plotkin, but Jordan will actually keep a minority portion of the stake.
“The NBA’s board of governors approved the sale of the Charlotte Hornets to a group led by Rick Schnall and Gabe Plotkin… The completed sale of the team — purchased at an approximate $3 billion valuation — will be executed in the next one to two weeks, sources said. Schnall, who had been a minority owner with the Atlanta Hawks, and Plotkin, a minority owner with the Hornets, will become the franchise’s governors. Jordan will keep a minority stake in the franchise.”
It remains to be seen what kind of plans these new owners have for the Hornets, but they already have experience in the NBA sphere so they should have some idea how to properly run a team.
As for Jordan, his legacy in the NBA is unbreakable, but it’s hard to deny his tenure as team owner was a bit underwhelming. While there is no denying that he helped elevate the franchise, they never achieved anything of note during his reign.
Why Did Jordan Struggle As NBA Team Owner?
For such an amazing player on the court, most fans were convinced that Jordan would be an expert on team building. At the very least, people assumed he’d be able to straw star power to Charlotte.
Sadly, that was never the case and it could be payback for what he did to many of his opponents during his playing days.
“Before we’re ultra critical of this dude is to understand that Michael Jordan ruined a lot of careers,” said Stephen A. Smith. “There’s a whole bunch of people that never won because of Michael Jordan. The players weren’t the only careers that he messed with. Once Michael Jordan became an owner, how many people do you think were interested in helping him do business?”
Wherever things went wrong, the Hornets desperately needed this change. Perhaps, with new leadership at the helm, they can finally start to go on the upward trajectory that has so far evaded them.
