Watching as a fan, the greatness of Steph Curry can be hard to believe at times. Whether it was his miraculous unanimous MVP season or his amazing run in the 2015 Finals, Curry has surely earned his reputation for being one of the league’s most electrifying players.

And even with as wild as things can get as a spectator, the experience is even crazier when it’s your job to defend him. For former Celtics swingman Grant Williams, this was partly his responsibility in last year’s Finals, before Steph went beast mode and put the series to bed. Speaking on the ‘Run Your Race‘ podcast, Williams spoke honestly about his faceoff against the 2x MVP.

“We’re up 2-1 in the Finals. Game 4, we’re leading the entire way, thinking we might go back to GS and win this. But them Charlotte, NC boys…that man was different. I grew up watching Warriors clean the Cavs. [Curry] was absurd to watch then, but playing vs. him…he’s different.”

The Celtics were up 2-1 on the Warriors with the title in their grasp, but Curry’s shot-making proved too much in the end and the Celtics were never able to find an answer. This past season, not even Curry could save the Dubs from disaster, but it’s still very clear that he remains a high-impact player in this league.

Is Steph Curry The Hardest Player To Guard In The NBA?

The crazy thing with Steph is that he’s more than just a shooter. He thinks while he’s on the floor and is always moving to create open looks for himself and his teammates. This constant state of attack puts defenders on their heels and makes Curry almost impossible to cover.

“One, because of his shot,” said Jamal Murray on what makes guarding Steph so difficult. “But two, because you don’t know what he’s gonna do. You don’t know if he’s just gonna pull it, you don’t know if he’s just gonna end up going by you, (or) if he’s gonna cross you over six times and then shoot and look away. You have absolutely no clue what he’s gonna do.”

Needless to say, Curry has found the recipe for success in the NBA, and now that he’s figured out the formula, nobody can slow him down.
