In the wake of Damian Lillard’s highly efficient 60-point performance on Wednesday, many fans in the Pacific Northwest are ready to hail Damian Lillard as the greatest Blazer ever.

Over the past 10 years, Lillard has been one of the best guards in basketball, with career averages of 24.9 points, 6.7 assists, and 4.2 rebounds per game. He is also part of the NBA’s exclusive club of the Top 75 players ever.

But even after all the evidence, former Blazers big man (and 2x NBA Champion) Mychal Thompson isn’t yet convinced that Lillard is the best to ever don the Portland jersey.

Speaking to Bill Oram on the ‘Sports by Northwest’ podcast, Mychal explained what is holding Dame back from his claim as the greatest in franchise history.

“It’s either Clyde or Bill Walton. I know Walton was only there for a short while but Bill was so great and he did lead them to a championship and no other Blazer has done that. So for me, it’s either Clyde or Bill Walton but Damian Lillard is making a strong case to take it over.”

Lillard, 32, has yet to add a championship to his resume, but his 30.1 scoring average this season is proof he still has time to get it done.

“He’s far from finished,” Thompson said. “He’s got a lot of years left so maybe by the time he retires he’ll lead the Blazers to a championship, which is very possible. If he does all that — cause Damian is definitely gonna be in the Hall of Fame — maybe he will retire as the greatest Blazer ever. He has a chance to pass Walton and Clyde, he’s tapping them on the shoulder right now.”

We will just have to wait and see how much longer Lillard plays at this level, but there are still doubts about whether or not the  Blazers can win before ‘Dame Time’ runs out.

Trail Blazers Showing Signs Of Life Amid Disappointing Season

This season has been rough for the Blazers, who started off 10-4 before falling off a cliff. Despite injuries to several key players, it’s clear that Portland doesn’t have enough to legitimately compete for a title.

This season, the team remains committed to building around their franchise guy, but building a truly elite roster will be easier said than done.
