Derrick Rose has signed a contract with the Memphis Grizzlies, in what is sure to be one of the more underrated pickups of the season. While his production fell off significantly last year with New York, Rose has a lot to offer still at 34 years of age.

And it’s not just on the court in Memphis that the former MVP is sure to have an impact. His influence on Ja Morant will be a big factor in helping the young superstar navigate his suspension and the aftermath, as NBA analyst Dan Devine explained.

“There’s a vibes component to that,” Devine said while talking about the Rose signing. “I talked to some people in Memphis media that were like, ‘If there’s somebody that Ja’s gonna maybe like listen to…’

“Somebody who can talk to Ja from the perspective of, ‘I’ve been at the absolute pinnacle, and I’ve had difficult things on and off the court that I’ve had to go through and move forward in my career and my life. So maybe like, there’s some synergy there.”

Derrick Rose was a level above Ja Morant has even achieved when he was a 21-year-old, becoming the youngest player in history to be named NBA MVP. He dealt with some serious injuries though, and managed to have a long career in the league, which is a testament to his greatness.

As Rose has also opened up about in the past, he came from a rough background too. Ja Morant’s involvement with guns and other such situations is causing big problems with his career, and that’s a part of life Derrick Rose has navigated as well. On the court and off the court, it’s hard to think of a more fitting mentor for Ja Morant.

Ja Morant Said Derrick Rose Opened Up A Path For Him In The NBA

Derrick Rose played just 27 games last season, averaging 5.6 points per game. As a youngster when he was a 3-time All-Star, Rose showed the power of an athletic, dominant point guard. That’s the mold Ja Morant fits in, and he has spoken about Rose’s influence on his career in the past.

“He made it to where people believe in guys like me. Coming in as, an athletic guard, I felt like he was pretty much the one who kind of made it more famous. With how acrobatic his finish is, his touch around the rim, and how explosive he was. Coming in, he was my comparison. It’s crazy to be out there on the floor sharing a court with him.”

There is no doubt that Ja Morant needs some serious guidance moving forward. A 25-game suspension will have been enough for him to learn his lesson in some ways, but whatever he hasn’t picked up on yet, Derrick Rose will be able to show him the light.
