4x All-Star Donovan Mitchell has only played 68 games for the Cleveland Cavaliers, but the word on the street is that he’s already over it. Speaking on Kevin Garnett’s podcast, former Celtics star Paul Pierce dropped the latest intel on Mitchell and why it seems his eventual departure is all but assured.

“I don’t think — things ain’t right in Cleveland,” Pierce said. “I’m not sure Donovan is happy over there. For one, I don’t think – he’s not signing an extension there. And two, it just seems like he and Garland, their chemistry wasn’t always there. So, it’ll be interesting to see how that works out because talent-wise, they got talent.”

The Cavaliers showed a lot of promise in their first season with Mitch. Finishing with a record of 51-31, the Cavs entered the playoffs as the 4th seed with ambitions to make a run to the NBA Finals. For his part, Donovan was leading the way with ridiculous efficiency, averaging 28.3 points and 4.4 assists on 48% shooting. Among the top highlights of his Cavs debut was the 71-point game he had back in January, which stands as one of the highest-scoring games in NBA history.

Cavaliers Got Exposed In The First Round

Up until the playoffs, the Cavaliers were satisfied with the trajectory of their season and most experts had them favored to win the first series against New York. Of course, we know now that the Cavaliers completely dropped the ball in the 5-game series, forgetting much of what made them so formidable throughout the season. Individually, Donovan Mitchell was holding his own but neither he nor anyone else on the roster had any answers to the Knicks’ interior attack with Julius Randle and Mitchell Robinson.

Coming into this season, the Cavs didn’t really do anything to address their flaws but there is some optimism that another full season together could give them the continuity they need to compete for a title. The key to success will depend mostly on Mitchell himself, and how much effort he puts into playing both sides of the floor. But if the Cavs don’t achieve results soon, Mitchell may not stick around for much longer anyway.

Who Will Trade For Mitchell?

As one of the most electrifying young guards in basketball, Donovan Mitchell is a highly coveted asset across the league. A 4x All-Star, All-NBA player, and career 24-point per-game scorer, Mitchell has the talent to tip the scales of title contention toward whichever team he’s on. Currently, there’s no confirmation on where Mitchell’s dream destination would be, but the Knicks have long held a connection to the young swingman.

Months before he was traded to the Cavaliers, Mitchell was reported to have his eyes on New York, where he can play for a big market on a team that has suffered for far too long. Evidently, it just wasn’t in the cards for the Knicks… but they could get another chance if things turn sour in Cleveland. Until that actually happens, the Cavaliers are going to do whatever they can to ensure their long-term prosperity.
