Carmelo Anthony could only laugh after a fan compared Brandon Ingram to him.

Carmelo Anthony was one of the greatest and most complete scorers of his generation but doesn’t always get the respect he thinks he deserves. On Tuesday, an NBA fan on X called Brandon Ingram the modern-day Carmelo, and the future Hall of Famer could only laugh in response.

The user doubled down on his take after Anthony reacted to it.

“Should’ve made it past the 2nd round more than once in your career to beat this comp. Would’ve helped if you didn’t bail on Denver too

Career averages:

22.5/6.2/2.7 on 44.7/35.5/81.4 splits

Brandon Ingram:

19.5/5.2/4.3 on 46.8/36.3/78.8 splits

Neither played a lick of defense”

Something tells me this individual isn’t the biggest Anthony fan in the world. Even if you don’t like him, though, comparing Ingram to him is a bit disrespectful. Sure, their career numbers aren’t all that different and they haven’t had a lot of postseason success, but just delving a bit deeper into their careers shows one achieved a lot more than the other.

From an individual standpoint, Anthony averaged over 25.0 points per game in seven different seasons in his career and won the 2013 scoring title along the way. Ingram, meanwhile, has never averaged over 25.0 PPG in any of his nine seasons and has never even gotten close to leading the league in scoring.

As for team success, Anthony led the Denver Nuggets to four straight 50-win seasons from 2007-08 to 2010-11. The 10-time All-Star took the Nuggets to the Western Conference Finals in 2009 and it took some Kobe Bryant magic to knock them out.

Even in Anthony’s somewhat disastrous stint with the New York Knicks, he still managed to lead the team to a 54-28 record in 2012-13. So, saying he rarely ever won isn’t quite accurate.

Ingram, on the other hand, has yet to lead a team to 50 wins in a season in his career and has never won a playoff series. It doesn’t look like the one-time All-Star is going to do it this season either unless the 5-20 New Orleans Pelicans trade him away before the deadline.

With all that in mind, I think it’s safe to say Ingram is not the modern-day Anthony.

Carmelo Anthony Believes He Would Average 28 PPG If He Played For The Knicks Today

I mentioned earlier that Anthony is one of the greatest scorers of his generation and he believes that would be the case if he played today too. On an episode of the 7PM in Brooklyn podcast, Anthony said he would average 28 points per game if he played for the Knicks today.

“I think I’ll be very similar to where I was at that point in time,” Anthony said. “Because of the makeup of the team. Not ‘I’m just gonna go score’ but I can be very effective and master s**t that I need to do in this offense. If I’m taking that player and implementing that into today’s game, it’d be very efficient, it’d be very effective.

“Like for what I know now and having that and being able to implement that into today? With that being said, to be able to play in this type of system today where it’s like four out, one in, pass and move… with this team, I’m averaging 28,” Anthony stated.

I think Anthony might be selling himself short, for once. He averaged over 28.0 PPG thrice in his career and probably could have averaged close to 30 points per game today with how great of a scorer he was.
