Charles Barkley has never been someone who hides his opinion, and when asked where LeBron James should finish his career, he didn’t hold back. The Hall of Famer made it clear that there is only one place where LeBron should finish his legendary career.
Speaking on the Insiders show, Barkley argued that a return to the Cleveland Cavaliers would be the only logical destination. And joining the Golden State Warriors or the Philadelphia 76ers would certainly look like ring-chasing.
“I think the only rightful farewell tour for LeBron would be with the Cleveland Cavaliers. Listen, if LeBron goes to Golden State or Philadelphia, it feels like he’s trying to cheat his way to another championship. He has no real affiliation with either of those franchises.”
“He should go back to Cleveland and finish his career there. He’s arguably the second-greatest basketball player I’ve ever seen. He’s been amazing. But chasing championships with Golden State or Philly? I don’t think that would be a fitting ending to his career. Going back to Cleveland, where he was born, where he built his legacy, and where he had such a massive impact on basketball, that, in my opinion, would be the perfect way to end his career.”
This isn’t the first time Barkley has spoken about LeBron’s decision. Earlier this week, he accused LeBron of chasing Michael Jordan’s imaginary ghost. Barkley said a lot of LeBron’s decisions have been motivated by strengthening his case in the GOAT debate.
And joining a team with no past history would only add to that narrative.
His comments come at a time when the Cavaliers continue to emerge as the favorites in the LeBron sweepstakes. Rival teams believe the Cavaliers are leading the race, but some reports suggest that the Miami Heat are legitimate contenders.
The Sixers and Warriors also remain in the hunt under different scenarios, while the Denver Nuggets and Minnesota Timberwolves remain long shots.
But for Barkley, only one destination truly makes sense.
It’s close to the place where LeBron was born. He entered the NBA as the No. 1 overall pick in 2003 and won the franchise’s first championship in 2016. Returning for a final time would give James a chance to finish his career where it all started while trying to win another title.
But Barkley’s point isn’t about basketball. It’s about legacy.
Going to a franchise where he has no connection, especially the Sixers or the Warriors, would attract more criticism. A final chapter in Cleveland would complete one of the most remarkable careers in NBA history with a storybook ending.
