Lonzo Ball is one of the best defensive point guards in the league when he’s healthy, and he is also a capable shooter and playmaker on the offensive side of the ball. This past season with the Chicago Bulls, Lonzo Ball averaged 13.0 PPG, 5.4 RPG, and 5.1 APG.

Even though he’s clearly a talented player, Lonzo Ball has been limited by injuries throughout his career. His season last year ended due to him getting injured, and it looks as though he will be missing the start of the 2022-23 season as well.

The Chicago Bulls have recently announced that Lonzo Ball will undergo surgery on his left knee, and will be re-evaluated in 4-6 weeks. There is no doubt that this is a blow for the Chicago Bulls, as they might be without Lonzo Ball for quite some time.

Chicago Bulls guard Lonzo Ball will undergo an arthroscopic debridement of his left knee on Wednesday, Sept. 28 in Los Angeles. He will be re-evaluated in 4-6 weeks.

Hopefully, we see Lonzo Ball make a speedy recovery and return to the fold as fast as possible. The Chicago Bulls are simply not the same team on the defensive end without him. However, his health should obviously take priority in this situation, and he should make sure that he’s fully healthy before suiting up for a game. Obviously, injuries can get worse if a player ends up suiting up without them being fully healed, and both Lonzo Ball and the Chicago Bulls will want to avoid that situation.

The Chicago Bulls Should Be Able To Stay Afloat Without Lonzo Ball

Though losing Lonzo Ball will definitely hurt the Chicago Bulls, they have some options to help mitigate him being out for the team. Notably, rookie Ayo Dosunmu looks like a natural stop-gap at the point guard position on both sides of the floor, and Alex Caruso is a solid option for the team as well. Newly-signed veteran Goran Dragic could also contribute as a floor spacer and playmaker.

When Lonzo Ball returns though, he is clearly the best option at the point guard position. His contributions on both ends of the floor make the Bulls a much more dynamic team, and with him, they are a solid playoff team in the Eastern Conference. We will see how far they end up getting next year, and it would be no surprise to see them make a deep playoff run based on the talent on their roster.
