Malcolm Brogdon was traded to the Boston Celtics this summer, and it is clear that he will be a difference-maker for the team. During his career, Brogdon has been highly-regarded as a combo guard that provides a mixture of ballhandling, shooting, and playmaking. Last season with the Indiana Pacers, Malcolm Brogdon averaged 19.1 PPG, 5.1 RPG, and 5.9 APG.
In a recent interview with Spencer Davies of Basketball News, Malcolm Brogdon explained how he would complement Celtics stars Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown. He claimed that he would “relieve pressure” and provide a “steady presence on the floor”.
“I think I can just relieve pressure. Whether that’s touching the paint, getting ’em easy shots. Whether that’s guarding players that they need a break on the defensive end [against] so they can focus on offense.
“But [mostly], being a steady presence on the floor that can help control the end of games, that can help control the flow of the game to make sure that they’re getting the ball in their spots, [so] they’re never having to overdo it to get a look or run their bodies into the ground. I want to be that guy that can create for ’em.”
It is quite likely that Malcolm Brogdon will end up playing the sixth-man role for the Boston Celtics next season. He has previously claimed that Brad Stevens wants him to embrace that role for the betterment of the team. Brogdon also added that adding him despite his lucrative contract just to play the sixth man role is a “testament” to how much the team wants to win.
“I really want to get back to winning on a high level, I want to win a championship. So whatever I can sacrifice to get back to that championship level, I’m willing to do it.”
“I think it really is a testament to the Boston Celtics and how much they want to win … they’re willing to have a guy that they’re paying $20 million per year come off the bench as the 6th man and try to win a championship.”
Hopefully, we will see the Boston Celtics thrive next season, and they will certainly be among the best teams in the Eastern Conference. Though they will have to face talented teams such as the Brooklyn Nets and the Milwaukee Bucks, they have a good chance of getting to the Finals.
The Boston Celtics were unable to play up to the level of the Golden State Warriors in the Finals, and perhaps another veteran voice in the locker room is just what they need. Hopefully, we see Malcolm Brogdon shine in a new role and continue to be an impactful player.
