Metta World Peace has never been one to shy away from unique or bold decisions on and off the basketball court. One of the most memorable stories from his career involves a game against Michael Jordan, during which World Peace went to extraordinary lengths to secure a pair of Air Jordans to wear in the matchup. During an interview on Byron Scott’s Fast Break, Metta recounted the lengths he went to ensure he was wearing Michael Jordan’s iconic sneakers during their encounter.

“Only one person could wear Jordan on the team. So I said, yo, I’m playing against MJ, I need the Jordans. I was wearing Nike, I said, I need them Jordans. They was like, nah, Reggie Miller wearing the Jordans.”

“I said, ‘Reggie, can you tell these dudes to give me some Jordans? He’s like, nah, you can’t get Jordans.'”

“So I drove after shoot around, drove to Chicago, two-hour ride, three-hour ride. Went to the Nike store, bought some Jordans. Drove back, yeah, you’ll see Jordans on my feet playing. I’m not gonna play against MJ without Jordans on me. You all crazy, Nike y’all crazy man, just send me to Jordan’s.”

So I drove—after shootaround—drove to Chicago. Two-hour ride, three-hour ride, went to the Nike store, bought some Jordans, then drove back. Yeah, you’ll see Jordans on my feet playing against MJ. I’m not going to play against MJ without Jordans! Y’all crazy, Nike, y’all crazy, man. Send me the Jordans.

This incredible determination not only showcased Metta’s admiration for Jordan but also reflected the mix of reverence and competitiveness that defined his approach to the game.

Wearing the signature shoe of the opponent you’re facing is seen by some as a sign of submission, but Metta viewed it differently. For him, wearing Air Jordans was a tribute to the player he idolized while growing up and also a way to mentally prepare himself for the challenge of going head-to-head with one of the greatest players in NBA history.

Metta’s antics didn’t guarantee a win that night, but they underlined his respect for the game’s legends and his refusal to back down from a challenge. For a player known for his defensive grit and intensity, this moment added another layer to the colorful and unpredictable legacy of Metta World Peace.

This story is one of many that define Metta’s eccentric career and personality. Beyond his quirks, it demonstrates the deep respect he held for the legends of the game, even as he was unafraid to compete against them at the highest level. Whether it was wearing Air Jordans or driving to great lengths to acquire them, Metta’s journey that day was a testament to his dedication and love for basketball.

Such moments remind fans why Metta remains one of the most memorable characters in NBA history.
