The MVP race in the NBA this season is arguably tighter than ever. It says something about how many pure superstars are in the league right now that MVP candidate Joel Embiid isn’t even an All-Star starter. The last 4 awards have gone to European players, and while the international stars are showing out again, they also have some competition from American players.

Nikola Jokic has once again become the frontrunner to win the MVP award. While he says he doesn’t want it or care about it, it would make him the first player since Larry Bird to bag 3 consecutive MVPs. But for years now, the conversation around the MVP has involved the term’ voter fatigue,’ which if taken into consideration, should put Jokic out of the race. And Tristan Thompson seemingly wants to switch it up this season, naming who he’d rather see win the MVP this season.

“Everyone’s talking about Jokic, but I’m gonna go Jayson Tatum. Two-time MVP Jokic, time to switch it up. My man JT, gotta give it to him. Come on, now.”

Nikola Jokic is the main man averaging almost a triple-double on the best team in the West. Jayson Tatum is the leading light on the NBA’s best team though, certainly giving him a case. Tristan Thompson might be pulling for his former teammate though, something he has done on another occasion in the same conversation.

Tristan Thompson Explains What Would Put LeBron James In The MVP Conversation

Tristan Thompson was with the Cleveland Cavaliers playing alongside LeBron James in his second stint. They went to the NBA Finals together many times and won a championship together as well. So it’s no surprise that Thompson thinks that if LeBron James can take the Lakers to a more respectable record, he should be considered for the MVP award.

“If the Lakers and LeBron can go 8 and 10 and get to the 6 to 7 seed, he is gotta be in the MVP conversation.”

The Western Conference is quite open and there is a chance the Lakers could make it to the playoffs, but giving LeBron James the MVP would be quite a stretch. There are stars toward the top of the standings winning while putting up elite numbers, and ultimately, they should be ahead of LeBron even if the Lakers finish 7th. And will someone please start mentioning Joel Embiid more in these conversations?
