This season, the MVP race has been ridiculously close. With Joel Embiid and Nikola Jokic going neck-and-neck for months, it was anyone’s guess who was going to end this season as the favorite.
But now, it’s looking more and more like Embiid will be the winner, and it seems the players themselves agree. According to Shams Charania, fellow players around the association have picked the 76ers superstar as the most valuable player this season.
“It’s hard to deny Joel Embiid. When I talk to players around the league, it’s been trending toward Joel Embiid as their pick as their vote, as the guy that they view as the most dominant, the most valuable on a nightly basis. So I think when you talk to players, the vote is looking at Joel Embiid.”
Of course, Nikola Jokic is the reigning 2x MVP already, so he was already facing a massive disadvantage this season. It was only through a dominant Nuggets performance and nearly averaging a triple-double that made him the frontrunner for much of the season.
But Embiid’s case can no longer be denied. With averages of 33.3 points, 10.2 rebounds, and 4.2 assists per game on 54.7% shooting, the big man has been a steady presence all year despite various injuries to his supporting cast.
The bigger question for Embiid now is how far he can lead this squad into the East playoff bracket.
Can The 76ers Win A Title This Year?
The Bucks and Celtics certainly pose a very real and dangerous threat to the Sixers, but this team may have enough to survive and finally make a run to the Finals. With Joel Embiid playing at his best and James Harden having a mini-resurgence, expectations couldn’t be higher.
“I think they got a good shot. This is probably the best shot that I’ve seen in recent years,” said Julius Erving. “But this team, they seem to be very resilient. They are definitely dynamic in terms of having a blend of weapons. Got our big guy, the top scorer in the league. Got Maxey, who’s a dynamo. Harden, a former MVP, on any given night can be the dominant player on the floor no matter who they’re playing against.”
Only time will tell if the 76ers can pull it off, but winning a championship will be the only way for Embiid to validate his MVP… and shut the haters up once and for all.
