With a 41-30 record this season, it’s fair to say the New York Knicks have performed above expectations so far. As the 5th seed in the East, they are a lock for the postseason and might even be capable of winning multiple rounds.

But are the Knicks really contending for the title, or are they doomed for another early postseason exit? According to NBA radio host Justin Termine, the Knicks just don’t have what it takes to compete with the elites in the East.

“You have to beat the 76ers in the first round, Celtics in the second round, Bucks in the third round – all on the road. That is not gonna happen. Maybe they can beat one of those teams, but I would be stunned if they did beat any of those teams. The Knicks are not a title contender.”

Factually speaking, the Knicks would actually play the Cleveland Cavaliers for their first-round matchup which might be the only series where they’d have a real chance to win.

But to make a deep push into the postseason, the Knicks would have to beat some really good teams that have the level of star power they don’t right now.

Can The Knicks Find A Superstar?

While the Knicks have found something special with the Jalen Brunson, Julius Randle, and RJ Barret core, they don’t yet have that top-tier superstar to push them over the edge.

This summer, no matter what happens in the playoffs, we can expect New York to be very aggressive in its search for star talent, and it could lead them to Zach LaVine in Chicago.

“Just before Chicago executives Arturas Karnisovas and Marc Eversley arrived in Las Vegas for the Showcase, Bulls star Zach LaVine drew the frustration of his teammates during a blowout loss to Minnesota. Several NBA teams, including the New York Knicks, are monitoring whether LaVine will become available on the trade market…” (via HoopsHype)

Whether it’s LaVine or some other big-name player,s the Knicks are going to need more than Brunson, Randle, and Josh hart if they want to go all the way.

Hopefully, sometime soon, we’ll see them finally take the leap we’ve been waiting for and push all their chips on the table for someone who will raise their ceiling to new heights.
