Luka Doncic will be entering the sixth season of his NBA career in a couple of months. Over the last five years, Doncic has already established himself as one of the best stars in the league. Despite being a phenomenal cornerstone player, Doncic is yet to take the Dallas Mavericks to the NBA Finals.

The farthest that he reached with the Mavs was in 2022 when they suffered a 1-4 Western Conference Finals defeat vs. the Golden State Warriors. Last season, the Mavericks missed the play-in tournament despite adding Kyrie Irving to the roster. Zach Buckley of Bleacher Report believes these failures could play a role in Luka Doncic becoming the next big superstar to demand a trade.

“What is Dallas’ plan to enter the championship conversation?” Buckley wrote. “The Mavs went 5-11 when Doncic and Irving played together last season, so counting on them alone to figure this out is asking a lot. Can they afford to wait on the growth of Josh Green, Jaden Hardy, Dereck Lively II, and Olivier-Maxence Prosper, or will they trade what little youth they have for established talent?”

He added: “Dallas is in a tough spot, which is where no team with a megastar of Doncic’s ilk should ever wind up. The Mavs have rarely resembled a championship contender during his five-year tenure—they have as many series wins as lottery trips (two apiece)—and if he can’t see their vision coming together, he may soon want out of it entirely.”

Doncic averaged 32.4 PPG, 8.6 RPG, and 8.0 APG in the 2022-23 NBA season. Missing the play-in tournament after putting in such numbers is demoralizing for any player.

The Mavs have re-signed Kyrie Irving in the offseason to ensure they do not suffer a similar fate to the previous season. But if the experiment fails, it could lead to Doncic demanding a trade sooner rather than later.

Will Luka Doncic Request A Trade In 2024?

Nowadays, there aren’t many loyal superstars in the NBA. Luka Doncic is believed to be among the rare population of loyal players. He has spent the first five seasons of his career with the Mavs.

But the organization fears Doncic could demand a trade in 2024 if they have another terrible regular season. Is there any truth to the report? Doncic denied it. The 24-year-old superstar is apparently happy in Dallas.

“I saw the report. I don’t know who, but somebody said that I was going to request a trade. It was funny because I didn’t know that was true. I didn’t say it. I’m happy here. There’s nothing to worry [about].”

As of now, Doncic is happy to stay with the Dallas Mavericks, but players have changed their minds. He could have a change of heart if the Mavs continue to struggle in the 2023-24 season and beyond.
