With Kevin Durant back on the West coast, the NBA hierarchy has been shaken up in a major way this season. Even before KD’s arrival, the Suns were one of the most dangerous teams in basketball, and now, with him on the roster, they stand as one of the favorites to win the title.

As we know now, the Suns were the only team really in play, and that’s because they were the team he specifically wanted to play for.

The New York Knicks, however, may have been another team in the fold as KD talks were still ongoing. According to Bill Simmons, there’s a good chance New York was a part of the KD sweepstakes, although they probably were never a serious contender to land him.

“I think the Knicks were the other team in this K.D. thing,” said Simmons. “It’s unclear to me whether they were an actual, real pursuer. I know the Knicks were the other team. It’s unclear to me if they were a real pursuer, or if they were trying to jack up the price for K.D. with the Suns kind of hoping maybe Booker down the road… I think the Booker, Knicks thing… just way down the road. He’s not a free agent until 2028, but if this turns into a situation where they have their run for three years and then it’s a rebuild and Devin Booker is like ‘Alright, well we had our run, we won our title, whatever.”

The Knicks have been stuck in purgatory for a while now, and Kevin Durant is obviously a guy who would change that. Unfortunately, as has been the case for years, the Knicks struck out and failed to land anyone to really move the needle for them this season.

Will The Knicks Ever Get Their Act Together?

Admittedly, the Knicks have a solid core of players that brings a mix of everything to the basketball floor. Sadly, without a true superstar on the roster, they will never contend for a title.

“Donovan Mitchell, who wanted to be in New York, who’s from New York, who expected to be wearing a New York Knicks uniform, is dropping 71,” said Knicks superfan Stephen A. Smith. “… I’m just so sick of it. They (the Knicks) make me sick.”

The Knicks still have a lot of work to do if they want to bring an NBA title back to the city, and Kevin Durant is no longer on the table to help save the day.

If they really want to improve and take that next step as an organization, getting the next big star will be crucial and they just keep missing out on opportunities to land one.
