After a hectic amount of activity in the early days of free agency, things seem to have cooled down a little. Still, it would be unwise to think that conversations aren’t happening. With several players being mentioned in trade rumors, moves are in the works. Among these, Michael Porter Jr.‘s situation in Brooklyn may also be worth looking at.

According to the latest reports, the Brooklyn Nets appear keen to part with Michael Porter Jr. before the 2026-27 season begins. When speaking about the likelihood of the Nets not offering Porter Jr. a sizable extension this summer, The New York Post’s Brian Lewis commented:

“There’s either an extension or a trade. I guess it depends on what one defines as exorbitant… I would think they’d prefer an extension that might be shorter. Have this year, plus maybe two. But I don’t think they’re looking to lock themselves into anything, as you would say, exorbitant.”

Michael Porter Jr. is currently in the final year of his contract. With a $40.8 million cap hit, Porter Jr. is an expensive contract to retain, especially because he hasn’t earned himself any noteworthy accolades. On that note, when fielding a question about the Nets potentially retaining Porter Jr. without extending him, Lewis continued:

“I don’t think it’s likely. I think, as we say, I think unless his demands are so egregious that conversations blow up, I would expect either him to be moved or him to be extended.”

While it is difficult to forecast what the Nets’ direction is, rumors about Porter Jr.’s departure have been floating around for a long time. Now, with an extension looming, it seems much more plausible for Brooklyn to pull the trigger on a deal.

For the most part, moving on from Michael Porter Jr. after the season he had is quite jarring. Given that he averaged 24.2 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 3.0 assists per game while shooting 46.3% from the field and 36.3% from three-point range, the forward was firing on all cylinders.

Considering that several teams are looking to upgrade their scoring depth, especially on the wings, a player like Porter Jr. is bound to draw attention on the trade market. Hence, we explore four teams that could greatly benefit from acquiring the 28-year-old.

The Hawks Gear Up For Another Playoff Run

Proposed Trade Details

Atlanta Hawks Receive: Michael Porter Jr.

Brooklyn Nets Receive: Zaccharie Risacher, Buddy Hield, Jock Landale, 2027 first-round pick, 2029 first-round pick

The Atlanta Hawks were the only team in the Eastern Conference to give the New York Knicks a tough time in the playoffs this year. Given the potential for the team to return as a playoff contender next season, the Hawks may see the value in making some upgrades.

By offloading Zaccharie Risacher ($13.8 million), Buddy Hield ($9.6 million), and Jock Landale ($14 million, expiring contract), the Hawks would be sending out $37.4 million in salaries. With the Nets shedding $3.4 million in salary with this deal and gaining two first-round picks, Brooklyn may see some value in making this trade.

For the Hawks, acquiring Michael Porter Jr. would be exceptional. Financially, this deal wouldn’t affect them much. Given that they are $18.2 million under the tax, the Hawks can comfortably absorb Porter Jr.’s contract, potentially even using a portion of the $11.0 million trade exception at their disposal for more flexibility.

From a performance point of view, adding a sharpshooter like Porter Jr. with terrific off-ball movement skills is worthwhile. Although Jalen Johnson has proven himself as a versatile forward, providing him and CJ McCollum with additional offensive support could prove valuable when mounting a playoff push.

Defensively, Porter Jr. may not bring much to the table, but his offensive contributions could be immense. With even more firepower in the bag, Atlanta could be threatening.

The Warriors Could Be An Ideal Landing Spot For Michael Porter Jr.

Proposed Trade Details

Golden State Warriors Receive: Michael Porter Jr.

Brooklyn Nets Receive: Jimmy Butler, 2027 first-round pick, 2032 first-round pick, 2033 first-round pick swap

The Warriors have been floated as a potential landing spot for Michael Porter Jr. in the past. Although no such move materialized, it would seem that now is as good a time as any for the Dubs to make a move.

The Golden State has already expressed its intentions of offloading Jimmy Butler’s $56.8 million expiring contract. A rebuilding team like the Nets may see value in the future cap flexibility they could gain from this deal, and when factoring in the draft compensation that comes with it, Brooklyn may be even more satisfied with this trade.

From a fit perspective, the Warriors are an ideal fit for a player like Porter Jr. Given his inclination to live behind the three-point line, the Dubs’ motion offense is more than capable of utilizing his gifts as a scorer to maximize his production. With the team’s need to support Stephen Curry with more scorers, adding a player like Porter Jr. seems reasonable.

For the Warriors, an acquisition like this could be monumental. With roughly $16 million coming off the books from swapping Butler for Porter Jr., the Dubs would gain enough flexibility to make some major roster additions. From re-signing Draymond Green to potentially landing LeBron James this summer, a move like this could completely transform the Warriors.

The Grizzlies Can Add To Their Core

Proposed Trade Details

Memphis Grizzlies Receive: Michael Porter Jr.

Brooklyn Nets Receive: Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, 2027 first-round pick, 2030 first-round pick (ORL), 2031 first-round pick (PHX)

On paper, this deal seems completely unreasonable. The notion of swapping a player like Michael Porter Jr. for Kentavious Caldwell-Pope wouldn’t make sense. However, some finer details could make this deal work.

Caldwell-Pope is on an expiring contract worth $21.6 million. The Nets may not be very enticed by the idea of acquiring him, but the three first-round picks included in the deal may make this trade more appealing.

For the Grizzlies, absorbing Porter Jr.’s $40.8 million contract may seem daunting. However, with Caldwell-Pope’s outgoing salary and a $28.8 million trade exception left over from the Jaren Jackson Jr. trade, Memphis can complete this transaction without any major cap implications.

With the financial matters resolved, the Grizzlies can then turn their attention to the performance benefits.

Although they are a young, rebuilding team, Memphis possesses some talented young players, such as Cedric Coward and Cameron Boozer. To pair with their youth, the Grizzlies also acquired a veteran like Jerami Grant as part of the trade with the Portland Trail Blazers for Ja Morant. Overall, this has vastly improved their wing depth.

By acquiring a player like Michael Porter Jr., the Grizzlies would not only boast size and shooting in the frontcourt but also depth. With the 28-year-old’s scoring versatility acting as a boost to Memphis’ offense, the team would enjoy enough flexibility while experimenting with different combinations.

If it works, the Grizzlies will be a far more competitive team than last year. If it doesn’t, the Grizzlies also stand to benefit from the cap flexibility they will gain once Porter Jr.’s contract expires.

The Trail Blazers Make Another Big Move

Proposed Trade Details

Portland Trail Blazers Receive: Michael Porter Jr.

Brooklyn Nets Receive: Shaedon Sharpe, Toumani Camara, 2028 first-round pick

For the Trail Blazers, a trade like this could be the difference between being a fledgling playoff team and a playoff contender. Having already acquired Ja Morant to pair with Damian Lillard and Jrue Holiday in the backcourt, Portland could see the benefit of adding another dynamic scorer to boost its offense.

Acquiring Porter Jr., while promising, may require the Blazers to part with some of their young talent. In this scenario, a gifted athlete in Shaedon Sharpe, an elite defensive prospect in Toumani Camara, and a first-round pick should suffice.

From a fit perspective, Michael Porter Jr. is more than capable of meshing with the Trail Blazers’ roster. With Morant likely to attack the rim on most possessions, having two sharpshooting threats as kick-out options is bound to wreak havoc on opposing defenses. When also factoring in how versatile Porter Jr. is while moving without the ball, both Morant and Lillard are capable of finding him on backdoor cuts and lobs.

Although he doesn’t add much defensively, his scoring and rebounding could be a massive upgrade over Jerami Grant. Given how Portland is currently constructed, adding a player like Michael Porter Jr. could make them a real threat in the West.
