Mission Impossible: How The Wolves Can Land Devin Booker This Summer

Well, the Minnesota Timberwolves were finally able to do it. After months of speculation and rumors, they were able to acquire D’Angelo Russell via trade to pair him up with one of his great friends in Karl-Anthony Towns. The Wolves are in prime position to become a formidable team for the foreseeable future as they now have two young all-star players that are both under contract for the next few seasons.

After this trade, some have speculated that the Wolves may try to trade for Devin Booker next as they try to make the trio of D’Lo-Booker-Towns happen. The trio potentially played together first came to fruition after their interview with Slam Magazine. It was there where the three expressed their deep desires to play with each other but at that time, it was just talking.

In this article, we will look at a scenario that could see the Wolves fulfilling the dreams of the three young all-stars and forming a potential dynasty for the future.

It was looking very promising for Devin Booker and the Phoenix Suns to start the season. After a questionable offseason, the Suns have silenced the critics with a 5-2 record to start the season and after a big win over the Philadelphia 76ers on November 4th, 2019, many thought that this was the year that the Suns would make some noise in the West. This hype surrounding them would be short-lived as they would suffer injuries to a lot of their key players. Now, the Suns are on the outside looking in with a 22-34 record and 6 games back of the 8th seed.

The Suns have been one of the laughing stocks in the league for some time now and since drafting Booker, they have been unable to surround him with the talent necessary to even compete for a playoff spot. This summer could get interesting as, after many disappointing seasons, Booker could ask for a change of scenery and request a trade. Over the past couple of seasons, we have seen many NBA stars such as Anthony Davis and Paul George request a trade from their respective teams after disappointing seasons and Booker could follow suit.

Now enter the Minnesota Timberwolves. If Booker says that he wants out this offseason, the Wolves should do whatever it takes to acquire the All-Star guard. Any trade would have to wait until the NBA draft and by then, we will know just how likely it is that a Booker trade would happen.

So, what can the Wolves offer in a potential Booker trade? Any trade would see the Wolves part ways with their highly coveted 2020 first-round pick. The draft lottery will be the determining factor on if a deal can be made because the Suns would not trade their franchise player for anything less than the 2nd overall pick in this draft. Pair this pick alongside other future first-round picks, Jarrett Culver, Josh Okogie, Malik Beasley, and cap fillers and this could be enough to entice the Suns.

Any remaining cap or assets that the Wolves would have after this potential deal could be used to sign veteran players who specialize in defense and three-point shooting. This trio could turn the Wolves into a dynasty and bring them back into contention once again.
