Former Oklahoma City Thunder player Enes Kanter made a bold statement regarding Russell Westbrook‘s apparent downfall in the NBA. While discussing the matter during an interview, Kanter claimed that the Los Angeles Lakers were responsible for the treatment Westbrook is receiving from the league today.

“It all started with the Lakers,” Kanter began. “Look at his career. As soon as he went to the Lakers- I don’t want to blame anyone. I don’t want to blame LeBron or whatever. But it’s hard to play for the Lakers, man.”

“If you play with someone like LeBron, it’s all about LeBron. And if the season fails, then you need some kind of scapegoat. That year, they picked Russ as a scapegoat. After that, look at his career. Right now, what is it, his 18th year? This guy, unfortunately, can’t even find a team to play right now. It’s tough.”

Enes Kanter pointed out how Russell Westbrook’s career took a significant hit, specifically after his tenure with the Lakers. With the mental impact being highlighted as a key factor, he added, “They called him some very hard names and some nicknames. I don’t even want to repeat it.”

Westbrook’s time in Los Angeles was difficult. After forming a superstar trio alongside Anthony Davis and LeBron James, many expected the Lakers to emerge as one of the top teams in the West. Unfortunately, with James running the show and under head coach Darvin Ham’s system, Russell Westbrook found his role reduced and his playing style restricted, resulting in a gradual decline in production.

As Kanter mentioned, playing for the Lakers is not easy. In one of the biggest markets and under a bright media spotlight, every action is heavily scrutinized. Considering how volatile the fan base can be, especially when writing off and criticizing players, Westbrook had to deal with a large amount of vitriol during his tenure.

Given that Westbrook’s children were also reportedly exposed to the same heckling from fans, the impact it must have had on the nine-time All-Star is understandable. Regardless, Kanter maintained that Westbrook not having a place in the league is a travesty.

Enes Kanter, who has also played alongside Russell Westbrook, has long maintained that the guard is one of the best teammates he’s ever had, something several players have attested to. Given the positive accounts from players about Westbrook, recent claims regarding internal agendas forcing the nine-time All-Star out of the league seem more plausible.

After an impressive outing with the Denver Nuggets last season, it is rather odd to witness the lack of interest from teams. Although the guard was reportedly close to joining the Sacramento Kings, the current outlook isn’t as promising.

Regardless, there are several teams that could still benefit from signing the former MVP. With Kevin Durant also publicly addressing the possibility of a reunion in Houston, the doors to return to the league could open up for Russell Westbrook.
