Luka Doncic and De’Aaron Fox are both set to make some massive moves after a spectacular 24 hours in the NBA. However, they will not be happy about how these moves impact their bottom lines. Both Doncic and Fox are set to lose a lot of money because of their trades, as neither are eligible to sign a five-year, $345 million supermax contract extension.
Here is how much money both players are set to lose:
Luka Doncic:
Before Being Traded – Eligible to sign a 5-Year, $345 million Supermax extension
After Being Traded – Eligible to sign a 5-Year, $229 million max extension
Total Money Lost – $116 million
De’Aaron Fox:
Before Being traded – Eligible to sign a 5-Year, $345 million Supermax extension if he made an All-NBA team with the Kings
After Being traded – Eligible to sign a 5-Year, $296 million max extension
Total Money Lost – $39 million
Between the two players, they are set to lose about $165 million. Of course, the amount of money they are making will be massive. But to lose out on the massive supermax deals because their teams decided to trade them will hurt. Fox was alright with this, as he was angling for a trade from the Kings, even telling them he wouldn’t sign an extension with them.
In fact, Fox will be glad about getting traded, not just for his career prospects, but also for his bottom line. If Fox left the Kings in free agency in 2026, he would have only been eligible to sign a four-year, $219 million contract with any other team.
However, Doncic will have all the reason in the world to be upset. He did not demand any trade from the Mavericks. In fact, he had no idea that any such deal was even being considered and was understandably caught off guard when the trade was announced.
Both Doncic and Fox are set to become free agents in 2026. Given the money at hand, however, neither player is expected to reject any contract extension offers and enter free agency in 2026. These trades might effectively rule out both players joining stars like Kevin Durant, LeBron James, and Kyrie Irving in the 2026 free agent class.
Perhaps both stars will just reconcile with the amount of money lost and hope that they can make it up later in their careers. Both of them are very young stars and will have long careers, as they haven’t even hit their respective primes right now.
Doncic’s move was by far the most shocking deal of the two, as there were several reports about Fox potentially being moved to the Spurs. Mavericks GM Nico Harrison seemed to take shots at Doncic in the aftermath of the trade, trying to insinuate that he was holding the team back defensively.
Both players are going to be hungry and motivated to earn their massive contracts with their new teams, and will hopefully not worry too much about their money in the years to come.
