Patrick Beverley Calls Out JJ Redick For Doc Rivers’ Criticism: “This Man Saved Your Career”

Patrick Beverley wasn't a fan of JJ Redick's harsh criticism of Doc Rivers.

JJ Redick went off on Bucks head coach Doc Rivers for not holding himself accountable for the struggles of the various teams he’s coached. Bucks player Patrick Beverley was coached by Doc on the Clippers as well and called out Redick for taking shots at a man that ‘saved his career’.

“This man Doc actually saved your career. Started you when no one else wanted to. And you retire go on TV and say that.”

Redick didn’t stay quiet after what Beverley had to say, disagreeing with Beverley assuming Doc saved his career while revealing he had other options in his career when he joined the Clippers.

“Pat my guy I had a four-year offer with a player option for the same money to be a starter for a different team. FOH ‘saved my career.'”

Beverley swiftly responded, but the conversation started to stray beyond Doc and toward the reality of Redick’s career at the time.

“Why didn’t u take it then? You were comfy in your role with the team. And don’t just say LA.”

Redick signed with Doc’s Clippers in 2013 after spending half a season with the Bucks. Redick wasn’t a highly-regarded NBA player before his stint with the Clippers, largely being underutilized in his first six years in the NBA with the Orlando Magic. After his doomed stint with the Bucks, Redick joined the Clippers in a three-team sign-and-trade in the summer of 2013.

In four seasons with the Clippers, Redick averaged 15.8 points on 44.0% from three. He set the Clippers’ single-season record for three-point percentage in 2015-16 (45.7%) and shots made in 2016-17 (201).

Redick may be right about Doc’s inability to take accountability, but many have rightfully pointed out that Redick played a huge role in those Clippers squads under Doc never succeeding in the postseason. His numbers always dipped in the postseason and he only had one playoff run with a 40.0% conversion on his threes.

Austin Rivers Called Out JJ Redick As Well

Redick’s rant on Doc Rivers prompted another ESPN analyst, former teammate Austin Rivers to mount a passionate defense on his dad’s behalf. Austin questioned how Doc has never been held accountable when he’s been fired from all the contenders he failed to bring a title to. In addition, he pointed out that Redick’s best years in the NBA came while playing under Doc.

“For someone who’s not accountable, he always seems to be held responsible considering he’s the guy who’s always fired when things don’t go right. It’s just weird coming from JJ because his best years were with the Clippers. In terms of accountability, your best years in the NBA were when you played for him and the Clippers. I don’t know if it’s frustration there or tension there because we had to sit you at the end of the game due to defensive reasons It’s just very ironic and kinda weird that you have this energy towards him.”

Naturally, Austin would defend his father like that. Beverley is currently playing under Doc, so even he has good reason to defend his coach. Another former player to have been under Doc is Marcin Gortat, who expressed his support for what Redick had to say.

Doc is not the ideal coach for a contender in 2024, but it seems JJ being the messenger pointing that out is rubbing people the wrong way given their history.
