  • Paul George revealed that he’s talking about an extension with the Los Angeles Clippers
  • Both sides are not on the same page yet
  • Availability has been an issue for George during his Clippers tenure

Forward Paul George is one of the best two-way players in the league and one of the best players on the Los Angeles Clippers. There is no doubt that he is a star-level talent when healthy, and the team can certainly contend with him as the No. 2 option behind Kawhi Leonard.

As of right now, George’s long-term future with the Clippers is unclear. He could potentially become a free agent in 2024 if he declines his $48.8 million player option. However, it seems as though the Clippers do want to retain the veteran star. Paul George recently revealed that he and the Clippers are in active contract extension talks.

“It’s active, but both sides have to be on the same page and that’s just what we’re trying to figure out.”

It will be interesting to see what Paul George’s next contract extension looks like. Though his talent is very obvious, his durability is definitely an issue. Paul George has played under 60 games during the last four seasons, and it is clear that the star has trouble staying healthy. With that being said, giving him an extension is preferable to losing him for nothing.

Last season, Paul George averaged 23.8 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 5.1 assists per game for the Clippers. The Clippers need him to get back to playing at an All-NBA level to get far in the Western Conference, and we’ll see what happens in the future.

The Philadelphia 76ers Are A Threat To Land Paul George In 2024

If Paul George were to hit free agency in 2024, there would likely be a number of teams willing to give him a long-term contract. In fact, a previous report revealed that the Philadelphia 76ers could sign George or his teammate Kawhi Leonard next summer.

“Philadelphia right now has positioned itself to be a big free-agent player. They could swoop in and go after Paul or Kawhi. While they prefer LA, a move to Philly might not be the worst for them.”

There is no doubt that pairing up with Joel Embiid could be an enticing proposition for George. Embiid is an MVP-level player and a dominant big man who is a good fit with George. This is definitely a situation to monitor going forward, and it’ll be interesting to see if the 76ers manage to land him.

Paul George Needs To Prove That He Can Stay Healthy

The main goal for Paul George this season is to show the Los Angeles Clippers that he can stay healthy. Ultimately, the best availability when it comes to basketball is availability, and it is clear that the Clippers need George to play more games to consistently be competitive.

George staying healthy throughout the season will likely give the Clippers and other teams more confidence when signing him to a long-term deal in 2024 free agency. Availability is also a factor when it comes to winning individual awards now, with players being required to suit up for 65 or more games to qualify for accolades, such as MVP or DPOY.

Hopefully, we see Paul George stay healthy this season. We all know how good George is when he’s on the court. The key thing is simply being able to play consistently.
