For much of his NBA career, Jaylen Brown has found himself included in trade talks and he has also had to play second fiddle to Jayson Tatum.
That isn’t ideal and when speaking about his future recently, Brown did not commit to the Boston Celtics. Hall of Famer and Celtics legend Paul Pierce feels that the star guard might be wanting to go somewhere else where he is the main man.
“Maybe Jaylen wants the opportunity to be ‘the guy’,” Pierce said on SiriusXM Radio. “We’ve seen this for years as guys have left teams. Just think (about) James Harden. James Harden wouldn’t be James Harden if he didn’t leave OKC. Tracy McGrady wouldn’t have turned into T-Mac if he didn’t leave Toronto. You never know. Maybe that’s on Jaylen’s mind or maybe he’ll stay. There’s a lot of factors that go into a mindset of a player of his caliber because we know he’s a premier player in this league. Maybe he wants the opportunity to see if he can be ‘the guy’ or who knows.”

That certainly could be the case. James Harden was a superb sixth man for the Oklahoma City Thunder and while he was very highly thought of, no one saw him turning into the superstar that he became with the Houston Rockets. Tracy McGrady also blossomed in a bigger role with the Orlando Magic and would go on to win multiple scoring titles, just like Harden.
Not many would have thought that those two would hit such heights, just the way that not many think that Brown can ever be in the conversation for the best player in the league. He is currently having the best season of his career, averaging 26.7 PPG, 6.9 RPG, 3.4 APG, and 1.1 SPG, and might just think that a bigger role elsewhere can help him improve those numbers even further.
Jaylen Brown Could Leave In 2024 If He Isn’t An All-NBA Player This Season
If Brown does make an All-NBA team this season, then the Celtics would have a better chance at keeping him around. That’s because he would then be eligible to sign a 4-year supermax extension with the Celtics this summer, which would be worth around $280 million. Brown would certainly agree to re-sign if given that kind of a deal but if he doesn’t make it, then the Celtics can only offer him a 4-year deal worth around $165.2 million.
It would then be in his best interests to bet on himself next season and become an unrestricted free agent in 2024, something the Celtics would not want. They would desperately be hoping he is an All-NBA player so that they can tie him down to a long-term deal before he ever gets close to testing free agency.
