The Portland Trail Blazers ended up holding on to the No. 3 overall pick in the 2023 Draft and selected generational guard prospect Scoot Henderson instead of making a trade for a win-now veteran.

Damian Lillard had repeatedly indicated he wanted the Blazers to trade the pick, but it seems the franchise couldn’t pass up on Henderson’s potential. The guard out of the G League Ignite explained why he and Dame should be teammates next season.

“If we combine our games, it’ll be over.”

All eyes will be on Lillard, who is being pushed into a position where he’ll have to openly request a trade. At this point, it may be the best-case scenario for both parties as the Blazers can dedicate themselves to rebuilding around Scoot, and Dame can go to a win-now team to compete for a championship.

Damian Lillard Faces A Big Decision

We’re at a point in the Lillard and Blazers’ relationship where continuing with this doesn’t make a lot of basketball sense. Similar to what happened with Kevin Garnett and the Minnesota Timberwolves, this relationship has hit its natural expiration date. Trading Dame now could yield great future results.

Henderson would be a good on-court fit next to Dame as an explosive guard that can create, play off-ball, and be a standout defender from day one. Anfernee Simons may become the odd man out, with the Blazers possibly convincing Dame to at least start the season with the team after trading Simons for a win-now prospect.
