Michael Jordan retired from the sport as arguably the greatest basketball player of all time. Over the course of his NBA career, Jordan won 6 championships but played around a similar core for his three-peats.
One rotational member of the Bulls during the 1991 to 1993 three-peats was Scott Williams, who was drafted by the team in the 1990 Draft. He revealed what it was like playing alongside MJ and how MJ treated him with brotherly love.
“After he’d bust my ass in practice, he would say: “Hey, listen, Juanita is cooking spaghetti tonight. Come over for dinner!” We broke some bread and we would watch whatever TNT game may have been on TV that night or we would find a game. Those types of things, for a guy like me who lost his parents a few years before that in Chicago and didn’t know anybody, that was huge for me. It made me feel welcome and part of the squad. He had brotherly love for me. I don’t care what a coach tells you about Xs and Os. Nothing goes as far as a guy like that showing you that kind of love. That made me want to play extra hard and get this dude where he was trying to go.” (h/t HoopsHype)
Williams didn’t carve out a solid role for himself in Chicago until the third championship season in 1992-93. He averaged 4.7 points and 4.4 rebounds over his 4 seasons with the Bulls.
He would play until 2005, retiring after a season with the Cleveland Cavaliers, led by LeBron James. It’s quite cool for him to be able to say he was teammates with MJ as a rookie and was then teammates with LeBron in his final NBA season.
Michael Jordan Was Loved And Respected
Despite the countless beatdowns Michael Jordan put upon players in practice or opponents on the court, everyone has massive respect for him. Most players believe Jordan is the greatest of all time, and it’s a title that nobody can ever take from MJ. Given the killer intensity with which Jordan played, it’s easy for players to look at him and hope to emulate not only his skills but his tenacity and mentality.
Jordan was the kind of player that could dunk on someone like David Robinson in practice and then do the exact same thing with remarkable consistency during a game. If the biggest rivals from his time think he is the greatest, it’s hard for us to sit 25 years in the future and dispute the experiences those NBA legends had at the time.
