Shams Charania is in the business of breaking big news stories, but he recently shared his thoughts on the GOAT debate. Charania appeared on the latest episode of The OGs Show, where co-host Mike Miller asked him who he thinks is the greatest ever, and he went with Kobe Bryant over Michael Jordan.

“So for me, growing up, when MJ won his six championships, I was four years old,” Charania said. “So, it’s hard for me to—people are like, ‘Yo, watch the YouTube videos and watch the games over.’ Like, it’s an experience. I feel like the greatest of all time is an experience, right?

“For me growing up, Kobe was someone that I watched very closely and the Mamba Mentality, killer instinct,” Charania continued. “I feel like some of those attributes, I felt like as a young, minority, parents from Pakistani background. I felt like I could apply some of that in my daily life. The killer mentality, and just go get it-ness every single day. So for me, that was something that I gravitated toward.”

I think it’s fair for Charania to say Jordan can’t be his GOAT because he never really got to watch the Chicago Bulls icon at his best. Bryant was the one whom he saw dominate on the court as he was growing up, and he was also inspired by the Los Angeles Lakers icon’s mentality and the way he carried himself.

While many, including myself, don’t consider Bryant the greatest ever, he had an incredible NBA career. In 20 seasons with the Lakers, he won five titles, two Finals MVPs, an MVP, and two scoring titles.

Bryant made 18 All-Star teams and 12 All-Defensive teams as well. He finished his storied career in 2016 with impressive averages of 25.0 points, 5.2 rebounds, 4.7 assists, 1.4 steals, and 0.5 blocks per game. While one may argue about where Bryant ranks on the all-time list, there is no debating the fact that he has gone down as one of the greatest players we have ever seen.

Many NBA Stars Have Kobe Bryant As Their GOAT

A lot of NBA fans and the media don’t view Bryant as the best ever, but that’s not the case when it comes to the players. Kobe made such a big impact on this generation that quite a few of today’s stars have him as their GOAT.

James Harden named Bryant his GOAT and revealed he was the player who made him fall in love with the game. Kyrie Irving, meanwhile, said Kobe is the greatest player ever and added he doesn’t care about any stats that someone might throw at him to suggest otherwise.

As for Paul George, he stated Jordan is the all-time GOAT but Bryant is his GOAT. Much like Charania, George also pointed to his growing up watching the Lakers icon in action, as a big reason for that.

I think the way George put it was best. You can have Bryant as your GOAT but also recognize that Jordan was objectively just better than him. The Bulls icon won six titles, six Finals MVPs, five MVPs, and 10 scoring titles in his NBA career. He dominated the NBA in the 1990s in a way that no other player had done before or since.
