Shaquille O’Neal is a top businessman and one of the wealthiest NBA players ever. But Shaq didn’t come from a lot of money, and his parents were instrumental in ensuring he never forgot that.

The stories of Shaquille O’Neal‘s father giving him perspective are legendary. And the legendary big man was similarly influenced by his mother Lucille, who was also an important figure in his life. He shared a beautiful sentiment thanking her in an interview in 2022.

(starts at 9:10 minutes)

“You know, women wake up, iron all our clothes, cook a hell of a breakfast, get us ready, drop us off at school, go to work, come home, take a 30 min tea break, prepare dinner, and never complain. Never take a sick day,” Shaquille O’Neal said.

“So I just wanted to be able to say, one day you don’t work anymore. How much do you make? $40,000. Here is $400,000 for you, tax-free. I love you. Just wanted to be able to do that. And I’ve done that, and more. So that was my goal.”

Shaquille O’Neal often gets hated for being too loud or outspoken, but the truth remains that he has always been extremely caring and respectful, especially with family. His love for his mother cannot be overstated, and it’s a beautiful thing to see. It’s not even just about the money, O’Neal’s mother Lucille is still a big influence on his life.

Shaquille O’Neal’s Mother Keeps Him Humble Despite All His Success

If a person enjoys as much success as Shaquille O’Neal, it would be understandable if it went to their head. And O’Neal certainly isn’t shy about all the things he can do or has achieved. But his mother has been instrumental in keeping him humble, like when she made him apologize to Dwight Howard. There’s also another amazing story of the time she called Shaq out for flexing a luxury car on social media

“I’ll tell you a true story. I bought a Rolls Royce and I’m flexing on Instagram. My mother was pissed. She said, ‘baby, we know you’re successful. You don’t have to throw it at people’s faces.”

It’s a great sign when people stay connected to their families even after making it big and becoming celebrities. The influence of his father and mother helped Shaquille O’Neal become who he is today, an NBA legend, a businessman, and as he wants to be remembered, a nice guy.
