Anthony Edwards is in the midst of a breakout season that has seen the 21-year-old be named an All-Star for the first time in his career.
JJ Redick believes he has already made the jump to superstar status, but Shaquille O’Neal sent Edwards a warning that he has to be more consistent and bizarrely compared him to Jeremy Lin.
“It’s not my place to say he’s great now (or) he’s not great,” O’Neal said. “But I think he’s a fabulous player but where I come from, watching people like Candace (Parker) and Jamal (Crawford) you have to be great for a long period of time. We all remember Jeremy Lin, what happened to him? Just saying… In order to be great, you have to be great for a consistent period of time, not one week, not one month, not one year. Gotta continue to do that.”

While it is completely fair to say that Edwards needs to be more consistent to be regarded as great, bringing up Jeremy Lin is really quite unfair to the Timberwolves star. Edwards is set to average over 20 PPG in back-to-back seasons while Lin never averaged that in any season in his career.
Edwards has also increased his production with each passing season and in this 2022-23 campaign, he is averaging 24.6 PPG, 5.9 RPG, and 4.5 APG. He is the biggest reason why the Minnesota Timberwolves are still in the playoff race, despite Karl-Anthony Towns missing most of the season with an injury. There’s no reason, at this point, to believe he won’t keep improving in the years to come.
Anthony Edwards Claims He Is The Best Player In The NBA
Edwards thinks of himself quite highly as well, as he recently claimed that he is the best player in the NBA at the moment. He pointed to his impact on both ends of the court as the reason for it and you wouldn’t have expected any other answer from him.
He had also stated prior to this that he is just as good as Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving, so confidence isn’t really something he has ever been short on. He does need to tone it down a little bit on the court though as head coach Chris Finch called him out for playing too much hero ball.
