Gregg Popovich rarely gives in to the tradition of hyping up players who aren’t on his team. But, for Luka Doncic, he made a rare exception.
The young star, who turns 22 next month, has emerged as one of the top players in this league. Pop’s glowing comments about him are only the latest in a long line of reasons why the hype surrounding this kid may be more than just noise…
“A quintessential basketball player,” the Spus coach said, per Brad Townsend of the Dallas Morning News. “He has an intrinsic feel for the game. He was built for this game. Also, he probably would be a great team handball player.
But at that size, to have that passing ability, that vision of the court, the confidence he plays with, he shoots the ball well, he competes. He just loves the game of basketball. His skills are top-notch, so he’s just a joy to watch.”
Despite his age and inexperience in the league, Luka has the league on notice, with career averages of 24.9 points, 8.7 rebounds, and 7.5 assists per game on 45.4% shooting.
The Mavericks, meanwhile, are on the come-up in the West. As a sure-fire lock for the playoffs, Luka has the chance to lead his team to greatness and bring home a title within the next few years.
The expectations are certainly high, but if Pop’s words ring with any hint of truth, Doncic should be well-equipped to handle it.
