Stephon Marbury is the latest former NBA player to give a take on the GOAT debate. Marbury appeared on The Big Podcast with Shaq recently where he shared his point of view on Michael Jordan, LeBron James, and Kobe Bryant.
“I really don’t put Michael Jordan in the same conversation with anyone else,” Marbury said. “I feel Michael Jordan is a one-of-one. It’s just one of that. Kobe is right behind Michael Jordan in his own class and in his own space, such as LeBron.
“I think LeBron is by far the best all-around basketball player that I’ve ever seen,” Marbury continued. “I’ve never seen anybody do so many things on the basketball court consistently like LeBron James.
“But when you speak about individual player from skill, from knowing angles of the court, from knowing space, knowing timing, knowing how to basically take over a game within the game by just imposing your will with pure dominance, I just feel like Michael Jordan has mastered that,” Marbury concluded.
A lot of what Marbury was saying there, applied to all three men. They figured out the angles and had a grasp of space and time and whatnot, but Jordan took over in the biggest moments in a way that no one else had done before or has done since. It is why Marbury and many others believe he is a cut above the rest.
Jordan won six titles, six Finals MVPs, five MVPs, 10 scoring titles, and a DPOY award in his career. He was a perfect 6-0 in the Finals and none of those matchups even went to a Game 7.
As for James, he is undoubtedly the greatest all-around player we have ever seen. The 39-year-old has impressive career averages of 27.1 points, 7.5 rebounds, 7.4 assists, 1.5 steals, and 0.7 blocks per game over 21 seasons.
Earlier this year, James became the first player in NBA history, to get to 40,000 points, 10,000 rebounds, and 10,000 assists. He is also the only player to rank in the top five all-time for points (1st) and assists (4th). All those feats along with a resume that includes four titles, four Finals MVPs, four MVPs, a scoring title, and an assists title is why James has been able to thrust himself into that GOAT debate.
Stephon Marbury Revealed He Was In Awe Of Michael Jordan’s Ball-Handling
Marbury is one of the finest ball-handlers in NBA history and he thinks Jordan doesn’t quite get the respect he deserves for how good he was at it too. Marbury revealed he was in awe of Jordan’s dribbling skills.
“The person who I look at when I watch basketball is Michael Jordan… I feel like you know Michael Jordan had every move that you could think of as a basketball player.”
“Jordan has so much flash in his handle that people don’t even realize because he wasn’t dribbling the basketball… He literally was like palming the basketball as he was dribbling the basketball. So, you can make the basketball go wherever you wanted to go.”
The fact that Jordan was able to palm the ball gave him quite an advantage on the court. As Marbury pointed out, he could literally make the basketball go wherever he wanted, which I’d say, is rather helpful.
