  • The reigning MVP has been tight-lipped about his potential decision so far

Team USA are currently looking to prepare for the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup, and their roster has left a lot to be desired. The top stars like Jayson Tatum, Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant, and Devin Booker are all not playing.

It can be expected that there will be bigger stars at the Olympics in 2024 on the roster, but there might be one surprise entry to that fold. The reigning MVP, Joel Embiid, could be among those to suit up for Team USA next year.

“I’ll just answer with a simple answer, and that’s yes. I’ve talked to him (Joel Embiid),” Grant Hill said on SiriusXM. “He has options, he’s a great player and he’s also somebody we’ve talked to about next summer. We’ll see how that plays out.”

Team USA could be stacked with All-NBA talent at all positions, but the center is something for them to worry about. The greatest big men around are international players, and Joel Embiid is one of them. Getting him to play for Team USA would be a big boost for the national team.

The Olympics will feature the best talent from around the world, and unlike FIBA, stars like Nikola Jokic will be competing for their countries. Team USA could desperately use someone like Embiid, although he could also end up choosing to play for France instead.

Joel Embiid Said He Would Make His Decision Regarding International Basketball After The Season

Joel Embiid was the MVP and scoring champion last season, averaging 33.1 points, 10.2 rebounds, 4.1 assists, and 1.7 blocks per game for the Sixers. And he has been chased by both USA and France for his services. He spoke about the impending decision last year

“I don’t want to talk about international stuff… Because it’s the NBA season. I’m focused on us getting better as a team and me getting better as a player. I’m focused on making it to the playoffs and doing something there. I’m gonna worry about the rest later.”

His words have not indicated what team he will eventually suit up for. But if Team USA can bag Joel Embiid and have him in their starting five, they might just roll up every other team at the 2024 Olympics.
